Introduction Buffer Solutions

1. What is a buffer solution?.

2. What does a buffer solution contain?.

3. Name 3 examples of buffer solutions. Mention the chemical compounds involved in the buffer solutions.

4. Is it possible to prepare buffer solutions with the following acid solutions?. Classify the compounds as a
strong or a weak acid and write down the dissociation reaction for each acid.

Acid solution Strong or Weak Acid Dissociation in water

H2CO2
HCl
HF
H3PO4
HNO3
CH3COOH
H2SO4
HNO2
HCN
H2CO3

5. What is the expression of the Henderson-Hasselbach equation?.

6. Write down the disscociation reaction of each buffer solution, identify the weak acid (or weak base) and its
corresponding conjugate base (or conjugate acid) and determine the pH of each buffer solution using the
Henderson-Hasselbach equation:
a) NH3 0,53 M and NH4Cl 0,25 M. Kb = 1,8 x 10-5
b) Ácido acético 0,30 M y acetato de sodio 0,52 M. Ka = 1,8 x 10-5
c) HF 0,10 M and NaF 0,20 M. Ka = 6,8 x 10-4

7. Calculate the pH of 0,500 mL of a buffer solution that is prepared by dissolving 0,242 g of NaH2PO4 and
0,568 g de Na2HPO4 in water. pKa2 = 7,20.

8. Calcular la variación de pH que tiene lugar cuando se agrega 0,00 mL, 0,50 mL, 1,0 mL, 1,5 mL y 2,0 mL de
HCl 0,50 M a 1,0 L de disolución amortiguadora preparada con volúmenes iguales de amoniaco 0,75 M y
cloruro de amonio 0,75 M. Kb = 1,8 x 10-5.

9. What is the pH of 1000 mL of a buffer solution prepared from 8,40 g of NaHCO3 and 16,0 g of Na2CO3. Ka2 =
4,70 x 10-11.
