COMPUTER OPERATING SYSTEMS

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
After reading this Information Sheet, you should be able to:

1. Identify fundamentals of operating systems

2. Determine the different types of operating systems

INTRODUCTION
THREE TYPES OF SOFTWARE
1. Operating System
2. Application Software
3. Programming Language

1. Operating system is a system software commonly simplified as “OS.”

An operating system is the most important software that runs on a computer. It
manages the computer's memory, processes, and all its software and hardware. It also
allows you to communicate with the computer without knowing how to speak the
computer's "language." Without an operating system, a computer is useless.

The Operating System's Job

Computer's operating system (OS) manages all of the software and hardware on the
computer. Most of the time, there are several different computer programs running
at the same time, and they all need to access your computer's central processing unit
(CPU), memory, and storage. The operating system coordinates all of this to make
sure each program gets what it needs.

TYPES OF OPERATING SYSTEMS

Operating systems usually come preloaded on any computer that you buy. Most
people use the operating system that comes with their computer, but it is possible
to upgrade or even change operating systems.

The three most common operating systems for personal computers are:

Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac OS X, and Linux.

Modern operating systems use a Graphical User Interface, or GUI
(pronounced "gooey"). A GUI lets you use your mouse to click on icons, buttons, and
menus, and everything is clearly displayed on the screen using a combination of
graphics and text.

Each operating system's GUI has a different look and feel, so if you switch to a
different operating system, it may seem unfamiliar at first. However, modern
operating systems are designed to be easy to use, and most of the basic
principles are the same.

Before GUIs, computers had a command-line interface, which meant the user had to
type every single command to the computer, and the computer would only display
text.

Microsoft created the Windows operating system in the mid-1980s. Over the
years, there have been many different versions of Windows, but the most recent ones
are Windows 10 (released in 2015), Windows 8 (2012), Windows 7 (2009), and Windows
Vista (2007). Windows comes pre-loaded on most new PCs, which helps to make it the
most popular operating system in the world.

all new Macintosh computers, or Macs. All of the recent versions are known as OS X
(pronounced O-S Ten), and the specific versions include El Capitan (released in
2015), Yosemite (2014), Mavericks (2013), Mountain Lion (2012), and Lion (2011).

Linux

Figure1.7 Linux Ubuntu 18.10 Desktop Interface

It is a family of open-source operating systems, which means that they can be
modified and distributed by anyone around the world. This is very different from
proprietary software like Windows, which can only be modified by the company
that owns it (Microsoft). The advantages of Linux are that it is free, and there are
many different distributions (or versions) that you can choose from. Each
distribution has a different look and feel, and the most popular ones include Ubuntu,
Mint, and Fedora.
Linux is named after Linus Torvalds, who created the Linux kernel in 1991.
The kernel is the computer code that is the central part of an operating system.

PERIPHERAL DEVICES

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
After reading this Information Sheet, you should be able to:
1. Identify the output and input device
2. Explain and classify the different computer peripherals and its
components

A computer system is a special subsystem of an organization's overall

information system. It is an integrated assembly of devices, centered on at least one
processing mechanism utilizing digital electronics, which are used to input, process,
store, and output data and information. Putting together a complete computer system,
however, is more involved than just connecting computer devices. In an effective and
efficient system, components are selected and organized with an understanding of the
inherent tradeoffs between overall system performance and cost, control, and
complexity.
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT:

Basic Hardware Components of Computer System

Today, almost everyone in our information society has a basic understanding of
what a computer is and what it can do. A contemporary computer system consists of a
central processing unit, primary storage, secondary storage, input devices, output
devices, and communications devices that work together with software to perform
calculations, organize data, and communicate with other computers. A computer is an
electronic machine, operating under the control of instructions stored in its own
memory, that can be programmed to accept data (input), process it into useful
information (output), and store it away in a secondary storage device (store) for
safekeeping or later reuse. The processing of input into output is directed by the
software but performed by the hardware.
Figure below shows some common computer hardware components.

APPLICATION AND DEVICES/ DRIVERS INSTALLATION PROCEDURES

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
After reading this Information Sheet, you should be able to:

 Identify different types of application software

 Define device drivers
 Determine the function and purpose of device drivers in software installation

INTRODUCTION
Device Drivers

A device is disabled without a driver.

Compare to real life scenario a device will not perform its specific task without a
device driver or a software that acts as an activator to activate certain device in order to
perform its full functionality.
In this information, you are about to learn the definition of driver, its function,
and its purpose in conducting software installation. How to prepare driver for
installation.

DRIVER
A driver or device driver is a software program that enables a specific
hardware device to work with a computer's operating system.

Figure 1.10 Driver’s function

Drivers may be required for internal components, such as video cards

and optical media drives, as well as external peripherals, such as printers and
monitors.

But most modern hardware is "plug and play" meaning the devices will
work without requiring driver installation. However, even if a hardware
device is recognized by the operating system, installing the correct
drivers may provide additional options and functionality for the device.

For example, most mice work automatically when they are connected to a PC.
However, installing the appropriate mouse driver may allow you to
customize the function of each button and adjust the mouse sensitivity.
Some keyboard drivers allow you to assign functions to specific keys,
such as controlling the volume or opening specific applications.

Driver is the linker of a certain hardware to computer. A hardware without

driver is like a plane without a pilot. It is still a machine but it does not act like a
machine itself.

Before installation/reformatting we should check first all device drivers needed

in installation process. Failure to do so, it may lead to different errors that may
cause the computer and its connected devices to work improperly. The following
errors may occur if device drivers are not properly installed.

1. If system’s drivers are not installed.

a. No sounds input and output (mic and speaker are not
working properly)
b. Not able to connect to the network
c. Poor video display
d. Manufacturers default software are not possible to use
e. Not able to print, if printer’s driver is not installed
f. And some IO ports are not usable (e.g, sd card reader)

2. If add-on devices’ drivers are not installed, including input and

output devices.
a. Devices are not possible to work properly according to its

specificity.
E.g.,
Scanner is not able to scan without the presence of its required
driver.

Preparing Driver for Installation

Procedures in preparing driver for installation.
1. Check the installation driver disc attached in a newly purchased computer.
2. If don’t have driver disc, try to identify the specificity of a computer,
including its brand name and code then search over the internet the
equivalent needed drivers.
3. If internet connection is not available, make it sure that you prepared
the all in one (AIO) DriverPack Solution app for you to install the required
drivers for installation.
Choosing the right drivers
 In choosing the correct drivers, you must to consider the following:
Check the specific required drivers for its equivalent devices.
E.g. You lose your disc driver attached upon purchasing your laptop.
You are trying to reformat a laptop. The first thing you need to do is to obtain its
hardware specification, get the specific brand name and code of your device. Search
the code in the internet and find its exact specification and download the drivers.
Every device has an equivalent driver, except those Plug and Play (PnP) devices
which do not require drivers in order to use it.

CREATING ALL IN ONE DRIVER

Downloading all drivers may require ample time and wide variety
resource. It may occupy large space on a disc. And, there are
hundreds of different devices which may requires hundreds of different
drivers. As a technician we need to have all drivers in our hand which is
impossible to obtain. But using Driver Pack application which enable us
to possess most recent drivers for different kinds of devices. With this
driver we can install any drivers for any devices in any point of time.
Procedure in Preparing DriverPack (All-in-One Driver)
1. Download DriverPack app at https://drp.su/en/foradmin
2. You will see a “DriverPack-Offline.torrent” downloaded file and the bottom corner
of the browser then click to install if download file is not visible press CTRL + J to

Application Software
You may have heard people talking about using an application or an app. But
what exactly does that mean? An application (or app) is a type of software that allows
you to perform specific tasks. Applications for desktop or laptop computers are
sometimes called desktop applications, and those for mobile devices are called mobile
apps. When you open an application, it runs inside the operating system until you close
it. Much of the time, you will have more than one application open at the same time,
and this is known as multitasking.
App is a very common term for an application, especially for simple applications
that can be downloaded cheaply or even for free. Many apps are also available for
mobile devices and even some TVs.
Three types of Application software
A. Desktop App is applications that run in a personal computer and laptops.
Types of Desktop Applications
There are countless desktop applications out there, and they fall into many
different categories. Some are more full-featured (like Microsoft Word), while others may
only do one or two things (like gadgets). Below are just a few types of applications that
you might use:
 Word Processors: A word processor allows you to write a letter, design a flyer,
and create many other kinds of documents. The most well-known word processor
is Microsoft Word.
 Personal Finance: Personal finance software, such as Quicken, allows you to
keep track of your income and expenses, create a budget, and more. Most
personal finance programs can automatically download information from your
bank, so you don't have to manually type in all of your transactions.

PREPARING INSTALLER APPS

Before doing installation, there are some essential factors that we should always know.
A. Platform Environment
We don’t just install application without knowing its environment. Identifying the
platform is very essential. We must to know its OS, chipsets and other hardware
component.

You are about to install an office 2019 app with x64 architecture in a computer
running with x86 processor. Technically it is incompatible due to dissimilar
architecture of your device and application.

B. Categories of Installer Apps

a. Open Source/Freeware are applications that can be use by the end users for free.
These applications don’t have equivalent price.
b. Closed Source/Paid Apps /Proprietary software is computer software licensed
under exclusive legal right of the copyright holder with the intent that the licensee
is given the right to use the software only under certain conditions, and restricted
from other uses, such as modification, sharing, studying, redistribution, or reverse
engineering. Are applications that need to purchase before using it such as, Adobe
Photoshop, Windows 8 and Microsoft Office.
c. Trial ware - It is also a type of proprietary software which is provided to users for a
certain limited trial basis and pursuant to a license which restricts any commercial
benefit, use or exploitation of the software. This application usually offers 30 days
trial or more.
d. Subscription-based application - A subscription-based is an apps that allows a
customer or organization to purchase or subscribe for a specific period for a set
price. Subscribers typically commit to the services on a monthly or annual basis.

TYPES OF INSTALLER
a. Desktop Apps are application that are installed in a computer either PC or laptop.
1. Portable Apps are applications that able to use without installation.
2. Installed Apps are applications that mandatorily installed in your computer
a. Web Apps are applications that are accessed over a network such as the Internet
or an intranet.
b. Metro Apps/Windows 8.1 Apps are applications that solely run in Windows 8 OS
or later version, that can be downloaded from Windows Apps Store
c. Mobile Apps are applications that designed to run in smartphone, or tablets such
as, surface tablet, iPad or galaxy tab.
d. Windows Universal apps are applications that run in different platforms using
Windows 10 operating system.
Purpose of Installation
Before the installation we need to identify first the objective its execution. You
need a certain apps for a certain purpose. You must to identify if you are really need
that particular apps or not.
