1. a) State and explain Norton’s theorem and find the current through the 2 ohm resistor of Fig. 1

2.a) Prove that the efficiency at Maximum power transfer is 50% and also prove the condition for

b) Using star delta conversion, find the equivalent resistance between terminal A and B in the

b) Describe the principle of operation of a single phase transformer. Show that the voltage ratio of
a transformer is directly proportional to its turns ratio.{CO2} 4+6

4. a) Describe the two wattmeter method for power measurement for balanced 3 phase circuits.

b) What is a Bus bar? Why is the voltage stepped up before transmission?Describe with relevant
sketches the possible schemes for 3-phase, 3-wire and 4-wire power transfer in power

5. Explain the principle of operation of Electrodynamometer type instrument with necessary

1.a) Derive an expression for the current division through two parallel resistances R1 and R2. Using the
expression, find out the current flowing through the resistance of 8Ω in Fig. 1. {CO1+CO4} 5+5

b) State and explain Maximum power transfer theorem. Calculate the value of load resistance RL which
will consume maximum power for the circuitshown in Fig. 2. {CO1+CO4} 5+5

2. a) Define active power, reactive power, apparent power and power factor of an AC circuit. {CO3}10

b) Find the average and rms value of the waveform shown in Fig. 3. {CO3}10

3. a) Derive an expression for the capacitance of coaxial-cable of length l having the shape of a cylinder
with inner radius r and outer radius R. {CO1}10
or

3. b) State and explain Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction. An iron ring of 16 cm2 cross sectional area
and 10 cm mean diameter and is uniformly wound with 300 turns. Find the exciting current necessary
to produce a flux density of 1.5 Wb/m2 withr = 500. Also find self inductance of the coil and energy
stored in the magnetic field. {CO1}10

5. a) Two mutually coupled coils are connected in series. Their self- inductances are L1and L2, respectively
and mutual inductance is M. Find the equivalent inductance of the combination for the cases: i) when
the magnetic flux produced by them are assisting each other. ii) the magnetic flux produced by them
are opposing each other. {CO1}10

b) (i) Explain the physical significance of hysteresis loop of a specimen of magnetic material.
(ii) Derive the relationship for converting three terminal star connected resistances into an equivalent
delta connection. {CO1}4+6

6. a) Discuss about salient features at resonance condition for parallel R-L-C circuit. Derive the condition
for resonance of the circuit with the help of phasor diagram. {CO3}10

b) Obtain current and power through the purely resistive circuit, if the voltage across the circuit is

7. a) Define ‘slip’ of a three-phase induction motor. Write down the equation for speed of an induction
motor in terms of its slip, supply frequency etc. A 3-phase 6 pole 50 Hz induction motor has a slip of
1 % at no load and 3 % at full load. Calculate i)Synchronous speed (ii) no load speed (iii) full load
speed iv) frequency of rotor current at standstill (v) frequency rotor current at full load.

b) The induced e.m.f. in a d.c. machine while running at 500 r.p.m. is 180V. Calculate the induced e.m.f.
when the machine is running at 600 r.p.m. Derive the expression you have used. {CO2, CO4}10

8. a) What are the advantages of 3-phase bulk power transmission over single phase? What is the
difference between the Transmission line and distribution line?Explain a typical bulk power transfer
scheme from generation to distribution with suitable schematic diagram indicating all the
components. {CO3} (10)

b) Why is alternating current used for bulk power transmission? Derive the relation between line and
phase voltage in star and delta connected 3-phase transmission system. {CO3}10

9. a) Explain the working principle of moving iron instruments with necessary diagram.

b) For the balanced Y-Y connected 3-phase system in Fig. 4, the line-line voltage is 208Vrms and the
total power absorbed by the load is 432W at a power factor of 0.6 leading. What is the approximate
value of the impedance Z? {CO4}10
