Select a situation (based on your experience) that suggests there is a training need. Use the following questions to define the
concern and your approach to the needs analysis process.

1. Write a brief summary of the “concern”. What is the specific performance gap? How is this gap impacting the
company/business and why is it important?
2. Who would you talk to, involve, or get information from, in order to get their perspective on what is causing the “concern”?
3. What needs assessment method would you use to identify whether training is the solution. Describe your rationale for the
method you choose.
4. Based on your analysis what recommendations that you would make?

Based on your first assignment, write three learning objectives. Each objective must contain the 3 criteria of “performance, condition,
and criterion”.
Your objectives will be evaluated on their completeness, conciseness, and the how easily the objectives can be measured.

Assignment 3

You are a training manager at Copy Corner Canada, a mid-size southern Ontario organization that provides office-related services to
corporate and individual clients. Your organization plans to expand operations to the west coast, and there will be an influx of new
front-line employees in the new operating region. The CEO wants to ensure that new employees are ready to hit the ground running
and decides that a significant training initiative is needed.

You are designing and delivering the training program in-house to ensure that organizational culture and values pervade the skills
training for new employees. The training will cover order taking, machine operation, Copy Corner’s customer service skills and
service recovery (to handle dissatisfied customers).

As the training manager, you want to make sure the new training initiative pays off. Specifically, you are interested in the effective,
continuous application of skills and knowledge on the job.

1. What common barriers, to the transfer of learning, are you likely to encounter? How could these barriers affect training
outcomes?
2. What specific recommendations would you make to ensure employees will use the training on the job?

Assignment 4

Nicky’s Carpet Cleaning Company provides carpet cleaning services for commercial businesses. On average a carpet cleaner can
clean six offices in a seven-hour shift, Monday through Friday. You have 100 cleaners currently working for you, and they work 250
days per year. A recent analysis of rework found that, on average, one in every 6 carpets cleaned is not up to your standards. The
company’s “Satisfaction Guarantee” policy states when a carpet does not meet standards it is redone immediately at no extra cost
to the customer.

The profit on cleaning each office is $25. You pay your cleaners $15 per hour. ($105 per day). When a carpet is re-cleaned you lose
$20 in employee time.

After conducting a needs analysis, the training manager proposed a training program that will reduce re-cleaning by 50%. The
training will take 4 hours and 25 employees can be trained per session. Training can be completed over two Saturdays, by running
two four-hour sessions on each Saturday.

1. In reviewing the related costs associated with the training program, identify which ones falls into the following categories:

• Trainee Compensation
• Overhead Costs

2. How much do the re-cleanings cost Nicky each year? Show all mathematical calculations.
3. After the training is complete, what is the estimated annual cost savings each year? Show all mathematical calculations.
4. What is the total cost of conducting the training?
5. If training was cancelled the day before, what would the training costs then be? (assume no cancellation fees would apply).
