Key Ideas:
Objectives:
● Identify and name different key signatures ● Definition of Key Signature: Explain that a key
● Foster confidence in understanding and working with signature is a set of sharps (#) or flats (b) placed at the
key signatures.

● Practice sight-reading music in various key signatures to
enhance motor skills. or key of a piece of music.

● The Circle of Fifths: Introduce the concept of the Circle

of Fifths, a circular arrangement of the twelve musical
pitches that shows the relationships between major
and minor keys. It provides a useful visual aid for
understanding key signatures.

● Major and Minor Keys: Differentiate between major

and minor keys. Major keys have a brighter and more
joyful sound, while minor keys have a darker and
sadder quality. Teach the specific pattern of whole and
half steps for constructing major and natural minor
scales.

● Sharps and Flats: Explain the concept of accidentals –

sharps (#) raise a note by a half step, and flats (b)
lower a note by a half step. Demonstrate how to
PHILIPPINE NORMAL UNIVERSITY

identify and use sharps and flats within a key
signature.

● Order of Sharps and Flats: Teach the order of sharps

and flats in key signatures. For sharps: F-C-G-D-A-E-B,
and for flats: B-E-A-D-G-C-F. Use the Circle of Fifths to
help students memorize the order.

● Key Signature Identification: Provide practice exercises

for students to identify key signatures both in the
treble and bass clef. Encourage the use of mnemonics
or memory aids to make the process easier.

● Relative Major and Minor: Explain the concept of

relative major and minor keys. Each major key has a
corresponding minor key with the same key signature,
and vice versa. For example, C major and A minor have
no sharps or flats.

● Transposition: Discuss how key signatures are crucial

for transposing music. Show how to transpose a piece
from one key to another using the appropriate key
signature.

Key signatures
-A key signature is a musical notation placed at the Yes, Teacher!
beginning of a musical staff to indicate the tonality or
key of a piece of music. It consists of a set of sharps
(#) or flats (b) that define which notes are to be
consistently raised or lowered throughout the piece.
Key signatures are used in both Western classical
music and various other genres.

*learners pay attention attentively

The purpose:
-The purpose of a key signature is to establish the
tonal center or "home" pitch, known as the tonic, and
to simplify the notation by avoiding the need for
accidentals (sharps or flats) to be placed before each
individual note that needs to be raised or lowered.

There are 15 possible key signatures, each

representing a different major or minor key. The
major keys are based on the major scale, while the
minor keys are based on the natural minor scale. For
example:

*learners continue to pay attention.

*learners pay attention attentively

● The key of C major has no sharps or flats in

its key signature.
● The key of G major has one sharp (F#) in its
key signature.
● The key of D major has two sharps (F# and
C#) in its key signature.
● The key of A major has three sharps (F#, C#,
and G#) in its key signature.

On the other hand, for minor keys, the key signature

represents the relative major's key signature. For
example, the key of A minor has no sharps or flats in
its key signature, which is the same as its relative
major, C major.

Key signatures are crucial for musicians, as they

provide valuable information about the tonality of a
piece and help performers identify which notes to play
as naturals, sharps, or flats without having to rely on
accidentals throughout the music.

THE CIRCLE OF FIFTHS

"Circle of Fifths," which is a visual representation of

the relationships between the 12 tones in Western
music. It is a helpful tool for understanding key
signatures, chord progressions, and the relationships
between different keys.

The Circle of Fifths is a circular diagram that arranges

the 12 pitches in a clockwise order, starting with C
major (or A minor) at the top. Each step moving
clockwise represents an interval of a perfect fifth,
which is equivalent to seven half-steps in Western

music.

FIFTHS ARE COMMON IN MUSIC.

• Outside of a chord makes a fifth.
• Cadences (endings) use fifths: II V I or sometimes
just V I.
• Jumping between primary chords (I, IV and V)
create 5ths. (I up to V or IV up to I )

• Learning scales in the order of the circle of fifths will

help you:
• Learn major scales & chords.
• Recognize key signatures.
• Know I and V chord in every key

ORDER OF SHARPS & FLATS:
