Family name: HN Given name:
The Hounsfield scale (HU) is applied to evaluate with a CT whether a tumor is benign
or not. We want to determine if the CT can be used to diagnose a type of tumor.
The values for four randomly selected patients with malignant tumor are:

13.4 15.6 12.9 14.3 不4059 1.1846

The values for five randomly selected patients with benign tumor are:

4.8 6.7 5.2 7.1 9.1

We are going to do the following hypothesis testings at the significance leveltso

↵ = 0.05.
In order to perform these tests, we are going to assume that the Hounsfield scale is
normally distributed.

1. Test whether the variances of both groups are identical or not. Calculate test
statistic and acceptance interval. Draw your conclusion.

2. We set as the null hypothesis that the average HU value does not depend on a benign
or malignant tumor. Calculate pool variance, test statistic, acceptance interval and
select the right conclusion.

Conclusion:

The test statistic value does not belongs to the acceptance region, the null–hypothesis
is rejected. We have enough evidence that the average of HU values depend on the
benign and malignant tumor.
