FEAST OF ST. JOHN MARIE VIANNEY

We remember and pray through the intercession all our priests as we celebrate
the Feast of St. John Marie Vianney. May God bless them with passion and
zeal as they carry out their ministry of leading the Lord’s flock. Image of St.
John Vianney enthroned inside the sacristy of the Manila Cathedral where
priests would prepare themselves for Liturgical celebrations particularly the
Holy Eucharist.

We greet our Archbishop-Emeritus, His Eminence Gaudencio B. Cardinal

Rosales, a happy birthday! He was Archbishop of Manila from 2003-2011. He
will be remembered as the one who pioneered the Manila Archdiocesan
General Pastoral Assembly (MAGPAS). Lolo Dency is an example of humility
and intimacy with the Lord as witnessed by Rev. Fr. Reginald R. Malicdem,
his former secretary and our former cathedral rector. May you have a blessed
day, Lolo Dency! Our prayers and love from the Mother Church!

ELEVATION OF THE DIOCESE OF MANILA AS AN ARCHDIOCESE

We remember today the 428th anniversary of the elevation of Manila as an
Archdiocese. Pope Clement VIII issued a papal brief erecting Manila as an
Archdiocese and its three suffragan dioceses, namely, the Dioceses of Nueva
Segovia, Nueva Caceres, and Cebu. Let us pray and support our Local
Churches as they take care of souls and establish firm and passionate servants
for our Holy Church.

SOLEMNITY OF THE ASSUMPTION

Holy Mother Church celebrates today the Solemnity of the Assumption of the
Blessed Virgin Mary. One of the stained glasses inside the cathedral depicts
the image of the day when Pope Pius XII, on November 1, 1950, declared the
Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary as a dogma of the Catholic Church.
The title of the document, Munificentissimus Deus (which means “The Most
Bountiful God”), defining this celebration is also inscribed in the stained
glass.

MEMORIAL OF ST. PIUS X

One of the cathedral side chapels is dedicated to St. Pius X. One can find there a
marble relief made by Giuseppe Lombardi where we can see Pius X venerating a
monstrance presented to him by an angel. He was known as the “Pope of the
Eucharist” and the one who lowered the age for those wanting to receive First
Holy Communion.

QUEENSHIP OF MARY
“Great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon
under her feet, and on her head, a crown of twelve stars.” (Revelation 12: 1) A
week after the celebration of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we
celebrate the Memorial of the Queenship of Mary. This feast was instituted by
Pope Pius XII in 1954. We particularly meditate this mystery of the Life of Jesus
and Mary whenever we would pray the fifth Glorious Mystery of the Holy
Rosary. A stained glass depicting the Queenship of Mary is enthroned in one of
our cathedral stained glasses.

MEMORIAL OF ST. ROSE OF LIMA

One of the images enthroned on our cathedral façade is St. Rose of Lima,
Secondary Patroness of the Philippines (First image from the right). On August
11, 1670, Pope Clement X issued a Papal Bull entitled Sacrosancti Apostolatus
Cura, declaring St. Rose of Lima as patroness of the Philippines including the
whole American continent and of the Indies. St. Rose of Lima, pray for us and
help us to live holy lives!
