Inception is a movie released in 2010 starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Dom Cobb, who is

the best in a specific job called extraction. It is a job where you steal information from the target
given by the client not physically steal info’s but steal it from people’s mind while they are
dreaming. When you enter the dream, the job starts, and it almost feels like you are in the real
world without knowing that you are still dreaming. Even though he was the best at extraction he
still has personal problems, or you can say family problems, fortunately Mr. Saito offered him a
job to redeem himself but if and only if he can accomplish the impossible, inception. Inception is
not about stealing information from the target but planting an idea to its mind to have a different
belief about something or it can change the whole character of the target by doing so.
During watching the movie, it made me realize that if this can be done in real life then
defining what is true from false can be nearly impossible. Just the idea of planting something in
your mind with out any basis at all even if it is false but you perceive it as your truth is terrifying.
But defining truth has their own steps and theories which are: the correspondence theory,
coherence theory, and pragmatism. Let us define first each theory, correspondence theory is
when your theory is based on facts, and you can perceive it through your 5 senses. For coherence
theory is your theory coheres or agree to your other beliefs then it can be considered as true.
Lastly pragmatism, it is where “truth works” in another term it is a truth that serves purpose to
you, if it can make you happy, if it can help you in your work, if it can help you overcome then it
can be considered truth under pragmatism.
As you watch closely to the movie you will realize that it covers up the three (3) grand
theories of truth, lets start first with correspondence theory. In the movie we can relate
correspondence theory is applied in the movie clip where Cobb was first testing Ariadne where
he stated that when you are in a dream it feels real because you can still fully use your senses
even though you are in a dream and also he stated after that that they are in the middle of their
workshop dreaming which is what really is happening therefore it corresponds to reality. As for
coherence theory, it is applied in the movie clip where their belief is each level of the dream
must have its own kick in order for the one on the higher level to work and that coheres with
every other belief that they had therefore it works, and it is considered as truth. Lastly
pragmatism also can be noticed in the theory where in each level of a dream must have its own
kick for you to wake up on the upper level of the dream since this theory helps them in waking
up from any dream levels meaning that this can be considered as truth under pragmatism.
In conclusion, inception is a great movie reference in identifying and understanding all
grand theories of truths since it can give examples of each one.
