CHM112A: Tutorial 5

21st April 2023

1. Consider the 2py orbital of the Hydrogen atom. Given that Y1,±1 (θ, φ) ∝ sin θ exp(±iφ)
and that R2,1 (r) ∝ re−r/2a0 , calculate the normalized wavefunction for 2py orbital.

2. Calculate the most probable distance of electron from the nucleus in the 2pz
orbital.

3. Write the integral expression for the probability of finding the electron in the
region x > 0, y > 0 for the 2pz orbital. Calculate this probability graphically
from the shape of the orbital.

4. Calculate the longest wavelength (in nm) of light absorbed by a He+ atom during
an electronic transition. From which state do the electronic transition of He+
absorb light in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum (380-700nm)
