What is language?

A language is a set of commonly spoken, manual (signed), or written symbols that people use to
communicate. The variety of functions and qualities displayed by a language increase with its complexity.
Language typically serves the purposes of communication, identity expression, play, creative expression,
and emotional release.

Grammar and vocabulary make up the structured system of communication known as language. It is the
main way that people express meaning, both verbally and in writing. Sign languages can also be used to
do this. A writing system that enables the transcription and preservation of linguistic sounds or signals has
been devised for the great majority of human languages.

Human languages have productivity and displacement features that allow for the formation of an infinite
number of sentences as well as the ability to refer to things, occasions, and concepts that are not now
being discussed. Human language is used in a socially prescribed manner and is learned.
