Lab 8: DIGITAL BOARD FAMILIARIZATION

Objectives
1. Learning basic principles involved in digital communication and learning
important concepts such as recognition of message signal, carrier pulse signal,
and modulated signal
2. Familiarization of equipment and software “Tie Pie Channel”
3. Understanding basics of hardware including digital communication board,
F.A.C.E.T. based unit, power supply multi-meter, virtual oscilloscope, and generator.

3 WORKFLOW

4 SOFTWARE/HARDWARE USED
• Tie Pie Channel – Software
• Digital communication board - Hardware
• F.A.C.E.T. based unit - Hardware
• Power supply multi-meter - Hardware
• Virtual oscilloscope - Hardware
• Generator - Hardware

6 SOFTWARE

TIE PIE CHANNEL – Multichannel Software

The use and benefits of the software are:

• Data Visualization and Analysis: It visualizes and analyzes data from

multiple channels simultaneously. It allows for the correlation and
comparison of data from various sources.
• Efficient Experimentation: It can collect data from different sensors or
sources during an experiment. This streamlines the experimental
process by reducing the need for separate data collection sessions,
ultimately saving time and resources.
• Professional Skill Development: TIE PIE is commonly used in research
and industry settings. It enhances our technical skill set and prepares
them for future roles where data acquisition, analysis, and visualization
are essential components.

7 HARDWARE
LabVolt Digital Communication Board:

Signal Modulation Practice: This Board is used with various

signal modulation techniques, such as Amplitude Modulation
(AM), Frequency Modulation (FM), and Phase Modulation (PM). It
tells how modulation alters the properties of signals for efficient
transmission and reception in real-world communication
systems.

F.A.C.E.T Based Unit:

CS351: Communication Systems Page 5

• This unit connects with board and distributes power and
controls the circuits.

It offers some benefits that we make use of:

• Durable construction integrating mechanical

components
• Voltage regulation and protection against over-voltage
and short-circuit conditions
• Silk-screened circuit and component identification

POWER SUPPLY MULTIMETER:

• Power supply multimeters provide the capability to set and regulate

voltage and current output while simultaneously measuring various
electrical parameters such as voltage, current, resistance, and
continuity.
• Power supply multimeters often come equipped with built-in safety
features such as overcurrent protection, overvoltage protection, and
short-circuit protection.

VIRTUAL OSCILLOSCOPE

• Virtual oscilloscope can download and on their devices,

enabling them to perform waveform analysis and
measurements whenever and wherever they need to. This
accessibility is particularly advantageous for learning,
troubleshooting, and quick measurements.

8 OBSERVATIONS
• For effective electronic communication, the complete continuous
analog voice music or data signals do not have to be transmitted
• Only transmit periodic amplitude samples of the analog signal.
Samples should be taken at high enough frequency
• Amplitude samples to contain all intelligence in original signal. The
samples to be taken at frequency twice the max message frequency
• Sampling freq in range of 8 to 32K Hz.
• Samples are pulses representing amplitude
• PAM, PWM, PPM represent pulse height, wideth and amplitude.
• PCM, DM binary digital codes represent message amplitude
• PCM signal are 8-bit codes

CS351: Communication Systems Page 7

• DM signals are 1-bit codes
• TDM combines several channels of PAM or PCM signal transmission
• TDM, time period between individual message signals samples is a
frame

9 CONCLUSION
The software and hardware are an integral part of
communication systems labs. The software mentioned, TIE PIE, is
vital for completion of communication tasks. The board and
F.A.C.E.T allow all modulation, and other tasks. Oscilloscope,
generator and others support the main tools to complete lab
tasks.
