KJOS About The Musie: CANTERBURY OVERTURE is an original composition in tripartite form. It contrasts modal (Dorian) harmonies with major. The modal sections are reminiscent of the Renaissance style and the major section, modern. “The tom-tom should be approximately twice the size of the snare drum, so there are two definite timbres in the percussion part. Although written in eight-measure phrases, there is, musically, space to breathe after four measures. The concert Ci in the Ist clarinet and 2nd comet/trumpet parts in ‘measure 8 may be a new note. Carefully tune both the A minor and A major chords, as both are used as dominant function chords. ‘At measure 17 the flutes continue the scale-wise motif, but the key center is now F, the relative major to d minor. The melody should predominate but the moving parts in the other woodwinds should be heard as well. A brief restatement of the opening theme leads to a common-tone modula- tion to the second section, which is in B> major, with all accidentals indicated in both the score and the parts. Carefully subdivide throughout the piece, especially in the section beginning at measure 29 30 the eighth notes are properly placed and the longer notes are the correct length. The style should be legato. Again, a scale-wise motif is used for the melodic material, giving a cohesive transition to the ‘major key. Although there is a contrast in style and key, the tempo remains constant. ‘The third section, beginning at measure 45, starts out like the opening of the piece for eight measures. At measure 53, the flute and bells reiterate the theme from measure 17 as a counter- ‘melody to the first theme, Separately, the first theme is modal and the flute/bell part is in F major, but the two fit very nicely. Do not allow the brass and lower woodwinds to cover up this second tune, In Dorian mode, the seventh note of the scale is lowered, unlike the leading tone in major. It is important to play this in tune. For example, in D Dorian, the seventh note of the scale is C natural, ‘a major second, as opposed to C sharp, a minor second. Practice different scale combinations such as concert C-D-Es and B*-C-D to both mentally and physically set the pitch and relationship of the Cand the D.
