Project Report1
Project Report1
1. INTRODUCTION
This report covers the design, planning and estimation of civil building which was our project for
the final year project of diploma in civil engineering. Before the preparation of planning and design
we worked together in groups and studied our given site. We researched and gathered information
relevant to our project as the part of literature view. We also studied numerous college buildings in
nearby locality and collect information’s from construction sight on our collage. Hence the
comparison of the standard requirements of a building with KMBR gave as further knowledge about
hoe we should consider various factors to design of educational (collage) building.
The project team’s goal was to design an architectural plan and structural system that is cost effective,
safe, and accommodating to the proposed use. The project team established an architectural layout
and floor plan based on the educational building. The floor plan and building layout were designed to
accordance with Kerala Municipal Building Rule and National Building Code.
The team then designed a structural framing system by using STAADproV8i software and All principle
structural members were designed, including beams, columns, and foundation elements manually also.
The project has been prepared in partial fulfilment of the course of student in final year civil engineering
during the year 2022-2023.
All structural elements are designed to sustain structural safety. The design method aims at
guaranteeing adequate safety for all structural elements as importance as its strength. The design of
reinforced structure is mainly by STTADproV8i software and also based on the limit state method. Plinth
area of building is taken as plan; elevation and section is given in the figure attached.
The object of project work is to get a practical knowledge in design, drawing, and in preparation of
detailed estimate.
1.3 SURVEYING
For preparing site plan we conducted chain survey and the plan was prepared on the results ob-
tained from chain survey. After that plot a rough sketch and then the area of the site was calculated.
1.4 Terms
Building line
A line which is away from the street boundary and up to which the main wall of the building facing
that street may lawfully extend, no portion of the building may extend beyond as prescribed in
these rules
Carpet aria
The usable floor area excluding the area of staircase, lift wells, escalators, ducts, toilets, air
condition plant room and electrical control room.
Floor area
The built up area of a building at any floor level .
Floor area ratio
The quotient obtained by dividing the total floor area on all floors by the area of the plot.
Frontage
The side or part of a side of a plot which abuts on a street .
Ground floor
The lowest storey of a building to which there is an entrance from the adjacent ground or street .
Height of room
The vertical distance between the floor and the lowest point of the ceiling.
Plinth
A portion of a structure between the surface of the surrounding ground and surface of the floor, first
above the ground.
Plinth area
Area of the building at the plinth level, does not include the area of porch ( not enclosed by wall )
uncovered staircase and the like.
Rear yard
The utility open space extending laterally along the rear side of the plot and forming part of the
plot any side other than rear if used as utility open space shall be deemed as rear yard.
Side yard
An open space extending laterally between any side of a building and the boundary of the
plot facing that side other than front and rear or utility yard and forming part of the plot.
Storey
A portion of a building included between the surface of the floor next above it, or if there be no
floor above it then the space between any floor and the ceiling next above it.

Ground floor
Total area = 1139.75m 2
First floor
Total area = 1138.56m 2
Total floor area of building = 1139.75+1138.56 =2278.31m 2
Coverage
Coverage = coverage area / plot area x 100
Plot area = 4230 m 2
Coverage area = 1315.5m2
Coverage = 1315.5 / 4230 x 100
= 31.09% `
In KMBR maximum permissible coverage is 35 %
31.09 ˂ 35 %

Total depth D = 400mm
Assume: effective cover as 40 mm

Load calculation
Weight of wall,w1 = unit weight x volume
= 20 x L x B x H
= 20 x 1 x 0.2 x 3.75
= 14.8kN/m
=14.8+2.5+7.5+3+1
= 28.8kN/m
Due to symmetry, W = 28.8x 2
= 57.6kN/m

No of bar = total area/area of one bar

pt = 100 x Ast/bd
= 100 x 10x (π/4) x 122/250 x 360

Refer table 19: IS 456:2000
τc = 0. 7 N/mm2
Τv > τc (so shear reinforcement required)
Vus = Vu – τc bd
=184x103– 0.7 x 250 x 360
= 121kN

2.2DESIGN OF COLUMN
Design load an column = 786KN (as per the data obtained feom STAADpro)
Percentage of steel
Detailing diagram
Support Reaction
From staad data obtained,
Loads on supports on Y direction = 785.979 KN
Total axial load acting on column = 785.979 – 36.088/
= 749.891KN
Using M20 concrete
and fe415 steel
Assuming the pile is to driven to a hard stratum available at a depth of 8m .
1. Main Reinforcement
Length of the pile = 8 m
Let the size of the pile be 400 × 400 mm
l/D ratio = 8/.4 = 20
Since this is grater than 12, the pile behaves as long column ,
Hence Reduction coefficient er = 1.25 – lef/48D
= 1.25 - 8/(48×0.4)
= 0.8 taken as 0.8
That is ,
Design load of long column = 749.891 KN/0.8
=937.363 KN
Load carrying capacity of column is given by p =σccAc ₊ σscAsc
Where ,
Ac = Area of concrete
= (400 × 400) – Asc = 16 × 10 4 – Asc
There for ,
937.363× 103 = 5 × (16×104-Asc) ₊ 190 Asc
937363.75 = 5 × 16 × 104 – 5Asc ₊ 190 Asc
