1. INTRODUCTION

This report covers the design, planning and estimation of civil building which was our project for
the final year project of diploma in civil engineering. Before the preparation of planning and design
we worked together in groups and studied our given site. We researched and gathered information
relevant to our project as the part of literature view. We also studied numerous college buildings in
nearby locality and collect information’s from construction sight on our collage. Hence the
comparison of the standard requirements of a building with KMBR gave as further knowledge about
hoe we should consider various factors to design of educational (collage) building.
The project team’s goal was to design an architectural plan and structural system that is cost effective,
safe, and accommodating to the proposed use. The project team established an architectural layout
and floor plan based on the educational building. The floor plan and building layout were designed to
accordance with Kerala Municipal Building Rule and National Building Code.

The team then designed a structural framing system by using STAADproV8i software and All principle
structural members were designed, including beams, columns, and foundation elements manually also.

The project has been prepared in partial fulfilment of the course of student in final year civil engineering
during the year 2022-2023.

1.1 NEED AND SCOPE

All structural elements are designed to sustain structural safety. The design method aims at
guaranteeing adequate safety for all structural elements as importance as its strength. The design of
reinforced structure is mainly by STTADproV8i software and also based on the limit state method. Plinth
area of building is taken as plan; elevation and section is given in the figure attached.

The object of project work is to get a practical knowledge in design, drawing, and in preparation of
detailed estimate.

Total floor area of building = 1139.75+1138.56 =2278.31m 2
Coverage
Coverage = coverage area / plot area x 100
Plot area = 4230 m 2
Coverage area = 1315.5m2
Coverage = 1315.5 / 4230 x 100
= 31.09% `
In KMBR maximum permissible coverage is 35 %
31.09 ˂ 35 %
Hence its ok

2.DESIGN OF RCC STRUCTURES

2.1DESIGN OF BEAM

Fe = fy 415
M25 = fck 250
Span = 4m
Total depth D = 400mm
Assume: effective cover as 40 mm
D ` =40mm
d = 400-40
= 360mm

Load calculation
Weight of wall,w1 = unit weight x volume
= 20 x L x B x H
= 20 x 1 x 0.2 x 3.75
= 14.8kN/m

Self weight of beam,w2 = unit weight x volume

= b x D x 25 x 1
= 0.25 x 0.4x 25 x 1
= 2.5kN/m

Slab load,w3 =0.15x x 25 x 2

= 7.5kN/m
Live load,w4 = 3 kN/m
Floor finish,w5 = 1kN/m
Total load, W = w1+w2+w3+w4+w5

PROJECT REPORT 2020-2023 DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

9

=14.8+2.5+7.5+3+1
= 28.8kN/m
Due to symmetry, W = 28.8x 2
= 57.6kN/m

Factored load = 57.6x 1.5

= 86.4kN/m

Calculation of effective span

Clear span + effective depth = 4+0.36
= 4.36m
Centre to centre distance
between the supports = 4+(0.4/2)+(0.4/2)
= 4.4m
So take 4.36 as effective span.

Calculation of design bending moment

Mu = wL2/12
= (86.4+4.362)/12
= 130.66KNm
To calculate maximum bending moment M ulim,
Xu = xulim
=0.48xd
= 0.48x360
= 172.8mm
Mulim = 0.36xfckxbx xulimx(d-0.42 xulim)
= 0.36x25x250x172.8(360-0.42x172.8)
=111.78
=112KNm

PROJECT REPORT 2020-2023 DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

10

Compare Mu with Mulim

Mu > Mulim
So, section is over reinforced section..
So we just need to design as doubly reinforced section.

Calculation of Ast (Area of steel in tension)

The moment due to additional steel in tension and compression,
Mu1 = Mu- Mulim
= 130.66-112
= 18KNm
Ast = Ast1 + Ast2
Mulim = 0.87fy Ast1 (d-0.42xu)
112x106 = 0.87x415x Ast1 (360-0.42x172.8)
Ast1 = 112x106/103801.87
= 1002mm2
Mu1 = 0.87fy Ast2(d-d`)
Ast2 = 18x106/0.87x415(360-40)
= 115.79 mm2
= 116 mm2
Ast = 1002+116
= 1118 mm2
Provide 12 mm Ø bars
Area of one bar = (π/4)x122
= 113 mm2
No of bar = total area/area of one bar
= 1118/113
= 9.89
=10 NOS
So, provide 10#12mm Ø bars in tension zone.

PROJECT REPORT 2020-2023 DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

11

Calculation of Asc (area of steel in compression)

Asc = Mu1/ Fsc(d-d`)
To find Fsc d`/d = 40/360
= 0.11

(0.15-0.1) / (342-353) = (0.15-0.11) / x

x = (0.04x11) /0.05
= 8.8
Fsc = 342+8.8
= 350.8
Asc = (18x106) / 350.8x(360-40)
= 280.69 mm2

Provide 12 mm Ø bars
No of bar = total area/area of one bar
= 280.69/113
=2.98
=3

So, provide 3#12mm Ø bars in compression zone.

PROJECT REPORT 2020-2023 DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

12

Calculation of shear reinforcement

Nominal Shear stress,
Vu = wL/2
=(86.4x 4.36)/2
= 184kN

τv = Vu/bd
= 184x103/250 x 360
= 2.04N/mm2

pt = 100 x Ast/bd
= 100 x 10x (π/4) x 122/250 x 360
= 1.25
Refer table 19: IS 456:2000
τc = 0. 7 N/mm2
Τv > τc (so shear reinforcement required)
Vus = Vu – τc bd
=184x103– 0.7 x 250 x 360
= 121kN

⸫sv = 0.87 fy Asv d/ Vus

= 0.87 x 415 x 2 x (π/4) x 82 x 360/121x 103
= 107.93 mm (provide 2 legged 8 mm stirrups)
Max spacing = (a) 0.75 d
= 0.75 x 360
= 270mm
(b) 300 mm

⸫ adopt spacing = 140 mm

Provide 8mm Ø bars @ 140mm c/c

2.2DESIGN OF COLUMN

Design load an column = 786KN (as per the data obtained feom STAADpro)
Percentage of steel

Pt lies between 0.8 and 6%

Let’s assume Pt = 4 %
Asc = 4 % of Ag
= 0.04 Ag
Area of concrete Ac
Ac = Ag – Asc
= Ag – 0.04Ag
Ac = 0.96 Ag
Pu = 0.4 fck . As + 0.67 fy Asc
786x103 = 0.4 x 25 x 0.96 Ag + 0.67 x 415 x 0.04 Ag
786x 103 = 9.6Ag + 11.12Ag
Ag = (786x103)/20.72
= 39.9x103
= 40x103mm2
width of beam = 400 mm
Area = 4002
= 160x103 mm2
Area of concrete and area of steel
Ac = 0.96 Ag
= 0.96 x 160 x 103
= 15.3x 104 mm2
Asc = 0.04 Ag
= 0.04x160x103
= 6400 mm2

2.3 DESIGN OF PILE

SELF WEIGHT OF THE COLUMN

RCC column
Height = 9.2m
Width = 400mm = 0.4 m
Length = 400mm = 0.4 m
Wt. of the column = [unit weight × volume of the column]
= [2500 kg/cum×(9.2×0.4×0.4)]
=3680 kg
1 kg is equal to 0.00980665 KN
There,
3500 kg = 3680 × 0.00980665
=36.088 KN

Support Reaction
From staad data obtained,
Loads on supports on Y direction = 785.979 KN
Total axial load acting on column = 785.979 – 36.088/
= 749.891KN
 Using M20 concrete
and fe415 steel
Assuming the pile is to driven to a hard stratum available at a depth of 8m .

For M20 concrete

σcc = N/ mm2
For fe415 steel
σsc = 190 N/mm2
Also ,
m = 13.33 for M20 concrete

PROJECT REPORT 2020-2023 DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

18

1. Main Reinforcement
Length of the pile = 8 m
Let the size of the pile be 400 × 400 mm
l/D ratio = 8/.4 = 20
Since this is grater than 12, the pile behaves as long column ,
Hence Reduction coefficient er = 1.25 – lef/48D
= 1.25 - 8/(48×0.4)
= 0.8 taken as 0.8
That is ,
Design load of long column = 749.891 KN/0.8
=937.363 KN
Load carrying capacity of column is given by p =σccAc ₊ σscAsc
Where ,
Ac = Area of concrete
= (400 × 400) – Asc = 16 × 10 4 – Asc
There for ,
937.363× 103 = 5 × (16×104-Asc) ₊ 190 Asc
937363.75 = 5 × 16 × 104 – 5Asc ₊ 190 Asc

937363.75 = 800000 + 185 Asc

185 Asc = 937363.75 – 800000
185 Asc = 137363.75
Asc = 137363.75/185
= 742.506 mm2
Since the length of the pile is less than 30 times the width , minimum reinforcement @1.25 %
gross cross section area = 1.25/100 (400×400)
= 2000mm2
That is ,
Providing 4 bars of 25 mm dia ,

PROJECT REPORT 2020-2023 DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

19

giving total area of steel = 4×‫ח‬D2/4

= 4×‫ח‬252/4
= 1960mm2
Providing a normal cover of 50mm.
Cover to the centres of main reinforcement using 8 mm dis ties
= 50+8+(25/2)
= 70.5mm

2.Lateral Reinforcement in the body of the pile

It should be @ 0.2 % gross volume

That is ,
Volume needed per mm length = 0.2/100(400×400)
= 320mm2
We provide nominal cover = 50 mm
Use 8mm dia ties,
Length of each side of the tie = 400-(2×50)-8
= 292mm
Area of 8mm dia bars = ‫ח‬D2/4
= ‫ח‬82/4
=50.3mm
That is,
Volume of each tie = 4×50.3×292
= 58750mm3
Pitch = 58750/320
= 183.59mm

Maximum pitch permissible should be up to 200mm.

Hence provide 8 mm dia ties @180mm c/c throughout the length of the pile.

PROJECT REPORT 2020-2023 DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

20

3.Lateral Reinforcement near pile head

Near pile head special spiral reinforcement is to be provided for a length of
3×400 = 1200
Volume of spiral @ 0.6% of gross volume ,
Per mm length is = 0.6/100(400×400×1)
= 960mm3
Here we using ,
8mm dia spiral having Aᶿ = ‫ח‬D2/4
= 50.3 mm2
Pitch is given by,
S = (circumference of spiral ×Aᶿ)/960
=( ‫×ח‬292×50.3)/960
= 48.04mm
Provide the spiral at 45mm pitch .
Also provide 6 additional bars of 16mm dia vertically within the spiral.

4.Lateral reinforcement near pile end

Volume of ties per mm length @ 0.6% of gross volume
= 0.6/100(400×400×1)
= 960 mm3
Volume of each ties = 58750mm3
Pitch = 58750/960
= 61.197 mm
Taken as 60mm.
Hence provide ties 60 mm c/c in a bottom length of
3×400 = 1200mm
5.Spacer forks and links
Provide two pairs of 12mm dia spacer fork ,
And 6mm dia links @ 1.5 mm c/c along length.

PROJECT REPORT 2020-2023 DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

6.Check for hamdlindiry

Providing 3 holes in the pile as follows
i. One hole at 0.293L = 0.293×8
= 2.344 = 2.4m
ii. One hole each from either and at distance of
0.206L = 0.206×8
= 1.648 = 1.7m
iii. Weight of pile per meter run
= 0.4×0.4×1×25000
= 4000 N/m
M = wl2/2
= (4000×2.52)/2
= 12500 Nm
Effective depth of pile section = 400-70.5
= 329.5mm
Let the neutral axis situated at and below one face
bn2/2+(mc-1)Asc(n-dc) = m Asc (d-n)
2
(400 ×n )/2+(1.5×13.33-1)980(n-70.5)= 13.33×980×(329.5-n)
200n2+(19.995-1)(980n-69090) = 4304390-13063.4n
200n2+18615.1n-1312364.55 = 4304390.3-13063.4n
200n2+(18615.1+13063.4n)-1312364.5-43043403
200n2+31678.5n-5616754.8 =0
Solving quadratic equation we get n = 106.2mm
Taking moment of forces about tensile we get,
bn(c/2)[d-(n/3)]+(1.5m-1) Asc i (d-dc)
Where ,
e’ =(n-dc)c/n
= (106.2-70.5)/106.2
= 0.336c
125×105 = 400×106.2c/2[329.5-(106.2/3)]+18.995×0.336c(329.5-70.5)
C = 1.6N/mm2
This is much less than 5 N/mm2.Hence safe .
M= modular ratio
Modular ratio of M20 concrete = 13.33
