10th ICSE Paper 1: Physics

You will not be allowed to write during first 15 minutes.
This time is to be spent in reading the question paper.
The time given at the head is allowed for writing the answers.

Question1

a) An iron ball is heated so that its temperature rises by 20ºC. If the heat supplied to it is 8000 J, find its heat
capacity. [2]
b)Two balls mass ratio 1 : 2 are dropped from the same height. (i) State the ratio between their velocities when
they strike the ground and (ii) ratio of the forces acting on them during motion. [2]
c) Why the class III levers are used when they offer mechanical advantage less than 1? [2]
d)What is the work done when a ball of 1 kg is rotated with uniform speed in complete circle with the force of
20N [2]
e) Why movable pulley is considered better than the single fixed pulley? [2]

(a) An electrical heater is rated 4 kW, 220 V. Find the cost of using this heater for 12 hours, if onekWh of electrical
energy costs Rs 3.25 [2]
(b) (i) Why are infra-red radiation preferred over ordinary visible light for taking photographs in fog? [1]
(ii) What difference would be felt by a listener when hearing sounds of wavelength 1.8m and 3.6m? [1]
(c) What type of lens is used and where the lens should be placed to get a point size image. For the same type of
lens where should the object be placed to get a magnified image? Explain with diagrams [3]
(d) Distinguish between heat and temperature? [2]
(e) Why is the core of an electromagnet made of soft iron? Give two reasons [1]

e) Indicate the positions of load, effort and fulcrum in the fore arm [2]

(a) State two ways by which the frequency of transverse vibrations of a
stretched string can be decreased? [2]
(b) Name two factors on which lateral displacement of a ray passing through
a glass slab depends upon? [2]
(c) State three actions that a total reflecting prism can produce and where are they used? [2]
(d) Which of the two wires of similar dimensions, of copper or nichrome, will you use for the electric heater
element? Explain giving reasons? [2]
(e) (i) Why does a welder wear special kind of glasses while welding? [1]
(ii) Does a beam of white light give a spectrum on passing through a hollow prism? [1]

Question 5
(a) A pulley system has velocity ratio 5.
(i) If the efficiency of the pulley system is 80% find its mechanical advantage.
(ii) If a load of 10kgf is pulled up by a distance of 2m in 10s, calculate the power developed by the effort
(g=10ms-2) [2]
(b) (i) A uniform meter scale is balanced at 60cm mark, when weights of 5gf and 40gf are suspended at 10cm
mark 80cm mark respectively. Calculate the weight of the meter scale [2]
(ii) RI of water with respect to air is 4/3 while that of glass with respect to air is 3/2. Find Refractive Index of
glass to water [2]
(c) How does the following affect the loudness of the note: [2]
(i) Amplitude?
(ii) Distance between observer and source?

Question6
(a) A bullet of mass 5 g travels with a speed of 500m/s. If it penetrates a fixed target which offers a constant
resistive force of 1000N against the motion of the bullet. Find
i) The initial K.E of the bullet,
ii) The distance through which the bullet willpenetrate before coming to rest.
iii) The speed with which the bullet emerges if the target is of thickness 0.4mm only. [3]
(b) (i) A radioactive substance is oxidized. What change would you expect to takeplace in the nature of its
radioactivity? Give a suitable reason.
(ii) What is meant by background radiation?
(iii) Name two internal sources of background radiation [3]
(c) (i) A source of heat supplies heat at aconstant rate to a solid
cube. The variation of the temperature of the cube withthe
heat supplied is shown in the figure given below. What does
the slope of the part DE represent? If CD = 2.5 AB, what does
it mean? [2]
(ii) In the figure given below point D divides the resistance of
part BC in two equal halves. Calculate the resistancebetween
the points P and Q. [2]

Question 7
a) A stretched wire 1m long is made to vibrate in two different modes as shown in diagrams (A) and (B) given
below.

(i) If the wavelength of wave produced in (A) is 2 m, what is the wavelength of wave produced in mode (B) in
the diagram?
(ii) In which case is the note produced louder? Give reason for your answer.
(iii) In which case is the pitch of the note produced higher? Give reason for your answer. [3]
b) In Mrs. Pinto’s flat there are 6 bulbs of 100W each, a heater of2kW and 5 fans of 50W each. If theseare used
everyday as shown below, calculate the cost of energy consumption for a month of 30 days atthe rate of Rs.
3.50 per kW h.
6 bulbs of 100 W each used 8h per day, 1 heater of 2 kW used half hour daily, 5 fans of 50 W each are used 6 h
everyday. [3]
c) State four main ways by which the speed of rotation of an electric motor can be increased [4]

(a) (i) Why does a magnetic needle show a deflection when brought close to a current carrying conductor.
(ii)A wire bent into a circle carries current in an anticlockwise direction. What polarity does this face of the coil
exhibit? [3]
(b) An electric bulb rated 220 V, 60W is working at full efficiency.
(i) State the resistance of the coil of the bulb.
(ii) Another identical bulb is connected in series with the first one across the main.
(1) Calculate the total power.
(2) What will be the total power, if the bulbs are connected in parallel? [3]
(c) (i) State two dissimilarities between a DC motor and an AC generator
(ii) State two factors on which the rate of emission of electrons depends on. [4]

Question 9
(a) (i) What do you mean by chain reaction in nuclear fission? How is it controlled?
(ii) State one use of nuclear fission. (3)
(b) (i) Name two isotopes of Uranium.
(ii) Which of these two isotopes is easily fissionable? Give reason. (3)
(c) A nucleus AXZ emits an alpha particle followed by gammaemission, thereafter it emits two beta particles to
form X3.
(i) Copy and complete the values of A and Z for X 3:

(ii) Out of alpha (a), beta (Ii) and gamma (X) radiations:
(1) which radiation is the most penetrating?
(2) which radiations are negatively charged? (4)

Question 10
a) The ray diagram given below illustrates the experimental set up for the determination of the focal length of a
converging lens using a plane mirror.
(i) State the magnification of the image formed.
(ii) Write two characteristics of the image formed.
(iii) What is the name given to the distance between the object and
optical centre of the lens in the diagram? [4]
(b) (i) A glass slab is placed over a page on which the word VIBGYOR is printed
with each letter in its corresponding colour.
(1) Will the image of all the letters be in the same place?
(2) If not, state which letter will be raised to the maximum. Give a reason for your answer.
(ii) What will be the colour of an object which appears green in white light and black in red light? [3]
(c)How does the value of angle of deviation produced by a prism change with an increase in the
(1) Value of angle of incidence
(2) Wave length of incident light
Draw a graph to mark the angle of minimum deviation [3]
