The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the world’s largest funding
organisation dedicated to promoting the international exchange of students and
researchers.

Important funding providers:


Federal Foreign Office – AA (35%),
Federal Ministry of Education and Research – BMBF (25%)
Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development – BMZ (10%)
European Union – EU (23%).

Selected DAAD Scholarship Programs
1. DAAD Study Visits for Group of Foreign Students

Study trip for groups of min. 10 to max. 15 students accompanied by one university lecturer

Target group: Undergraduate/post-graduate students from foreign university

Duration of visit : 7-12 days


Funding : Mobility Lump Sum Euro 735/person
Lump sum of 50 Euro per person/day

Application deadline:
1 February (for trips to begin after June)
1 May (for trips to begin after September)
1 November (for trips to begin after March)

 Choosing the right PhD (2 Paths of PhD in Germany)

 Individual Doctorate – during an individual PhD you will be in contact with your supervisor but will work mainly on
very independent basis. Self discipline and good organizational skills are required for this phd type.

Structured PhD Programme

 Structured phd program – this type is chosen by 23% of phd students in Germany. If you like to work in team, involve
in a project team and want more intensive supervisions, the structured phd programs will be of interest to you.

2A. Research Grants –One Year Grants for Doctoral Candidates

• Funding for a PhD research project in Germany


• Agreement from Supervisor
• Duration of Funding 7-12 months

2B. Research Grants-Bi-nationally Supervised Doctoral Degrees/Cotutelle

1. Sandwich model:
• PhD supervised by supervisor in home university and host institute in Germany.
• Your project must be agreed with both supervisors
• Doctoral degree awarded by home university
• Duration of funding up to 12 months. Extensions depend on whether the selection committee considers the previous
award period to have been successfully completed.

2. Cotutelle:
• The German university and home university award doctoral degree jointly.
• Duration of funding is up to 18 months with possibility extension up to 6 months

Master's degree
