MODULE -1 4. A) An engine used for pumping water develops a brake power of 3.68 kW. Its indicated thermal efficiency is 30%, mechanical efficiency is 80%, calorific value of the fuel is 42000 kJ/kg and specific gravity = 0.875 Calculate = i) the fuel consumption of the engine in (a) kg/h (b) litres/h ii) indicated specific fuel consumption and ili) brake specific fuel consumption. B) Mention the various assumptions made in air standard analysis. C) Define i) Mean effective pressure ii) Relative efficiency and iii) Mean piston speed D) What are the different air-fuel mixtures on which an engine can be operated ? (6+4+6+4) 2. A) Briefly explain : i) time loss factor and ii) heat loss factor B) An engine working on the Otto cycle uses hexane (C,H,,) as fuel. The engine works on chemically correct air fuel ratio and the combustion ratio is 8.5. A) Compare diesel engine and gasoline engine emissions. B) With help of flow and T-S diagrams explain the air standard cycle for jet propulsion plant. ©) Aturbo-jet engine travels at 220 mis in air at 0.78 bar and ~ 7.2°C, Air first enters diffuser in which it is brought to rest relative to the unit and it is then compressed in a compressor through a pressure ratio of 6 and fed to a turbine at 1110°C. The gases expand through the turbine and then through the nozzle to atmospheric pressure (i.e., 0.78 bar). The efficiencies of diffuser, nozzle and compressor are each 90%. The efficiency of turbine is 80%. Determine : i) Air-fuel ratio ii) Specific thrust of the unit iii) Total thrust, if the inlet cross-section of diffuser is 0,.12 m? Assume calorific value of fuel as 44150 ku/kg of fuel. (7+5+8)
