Introduction
Highway engineering is the branch of Civil engineering which deals with Planning, Design,
Construction, Operation and Maintenance of roads, bridges, and tunnels to ensure the safe and
effective transportation of people and goods. Design of road geometry involves the design of its
Horizontal and vertical curves. For smooth and efficient moment on road, the well-defined
geometry of road is very important. Efficient movement in any area rely on a well-connected
system of Roads and Highways.

Problem Statement
The design of road geometrics represents the largest economic cost, in addition to the time,
effort and high cost in providing field surveys and data needed for design and implementation
purposes. Integrating the freely available remotely sensed data along with knowledge on
geometric design approaches can solve this problem. Use of the tools such as GOOGLE EARTH
PRO to extract the required data for setting the horizontal and vertical curves at various sections
for the route (kml file attached) shown in the figure below. The geometric design of the highway
should be proposed according to AASHTO's Standards by assuming design speed of 30 mph.

Objective
Objective of this project is to design the geometry of a given route with the help of tools such as
Google Earth to extract the required data for setting the horizontal and vertical curves at various

sections and Integrating freely available remotely sensed data along with knowledge on
geometric design approaches of AASHTO.

Methodology
For this project, GOOGLE EARTH PRO was used and manual calculations were done.
Vertical Curves
Vertical alignment Specifies the Elevation of points along the ground where abrupt change in the
elevation of ground occurs, we provide vertical curves for safe and efficient maneuvering at that
point. Safe stopping sight distance required for safe movement.

Procedure
1-First we import kml file of given route in Google earth pro
2-Then we open the elevation of given route
3-Where we observed sudden changes in elevation of ground occurs, we provide vertical curves
4-Below fig show at two points sudden elevation of ground changes we provide vertical curves
at that points according to AASHTO guidelines. Calculation of vertical curves is attached in this
report.

Figure (1)
The first vertical curve will be a crest curve and will require two gradients, G1 and G2. It is evident
that G1 will be the positive gradient as the elevation increases and we will get a negative gradient
G2 where the elevation decreases.

Another gradient G3 will be calculated for the sag vertical curve which will form after the first
curve. To accurately obtain the gradients, we input the data in a GPS visualizer tool and obtain a
simplified elevation profile that we can easily use for gradient calculation. This simplified profile
is shown below in Figure (2).

HORIZONTAL CURVE
Plan view show the horizontal alignment of route. We provide Horizontal curves along the route
due to topography that not allow the alignment to straight
And we provided horizontal curves for safe and efficient maneuvering at that point. Safe stopping
sight distance required for safe movement.

Procedure
1- First, we import kml file of given route in Google earth pro
2- Then where sudden change in profile occur, we design at that point the Horizontal curve
According to AASHTO guidelines

CONCLUSION
Use of the tools like Google earth provide us comparable results with field
survey data and this is cost economical, time saving process for the design the geometry of road.
