I. PURPOSE
This calculation purpose is to adequately size the 30kV ZigZag Transformer & NGR for Ezz Steel S\S Extension

II. CALCULATION INPUT DATA

Refering to the specs S-Schedual (S-3) the following Data is considered to Size the Earthing transformer and the NGR.
Description Input Data Unit
Connection Group ZN
Rated Voltage 36 kV
Syestem Voltage 30 kV
Fault current 0.200 kA
Fault duration 30 Sec

III. Earthing Transformer Rated Data

The required impedance at neutral point for the specified ground fault current according to the above input data
VL
The total Z impedance for 3 phase (ohm) =
√3 . I SC
30
=
√3 . 0.200
Z impedance for 3 phase (ohm) = 86.603 86.603 Ω

The single phase impedance of the earthing transformer with a ZN connection = 3 x 3-Phase Impedance
Z impedance for 1 phase (ohm) = 3 X 86.603 = 259.809 Ω

Zigzag transformer Rated KVA

As Zigzag transformer does not carry the fault current continuously, short time Sizing factor ( K factor ) should be considered:

K factor for time 30 SEC according to ANSI C57.109 defines damage characteristics for oil-
filled, power transformers 0.158

the calculated S rating (KVA) = K Vph Isc

30 X 0.200 X 1000
then the short time calculated S rating (KVA) = Vph Isc = = 3464.102 kVA
√3

So the selected continous S rating is KVA = 0.158 X 3464.102 = 547.329 kVA

3S
The calculated precentage impedance of zigzag transformer (%) = X 100
√3 . VL . I SC
3 X 547.329
= X 100
√3 X 30 X 0.200 X 1000

the calculated precentage impedance of zigzag transformer (%) = 15.80%

Zigzag transformer actual impedance Determination

selected S base (MVA) 0.547329 MVA
selected V base ( kV) 30 kV

2
V
Zbase (Ohm) =
S
30^2
= = 1644.35 Ω
0.547329

So, Z actual of zigzag (ohm) for 1 phase = ZP.U X Zbase

= 1644.35 X 0.158 = 259.8073 Ω

assuming X >>>> R

reactance (X) of zigzag ( ohm) for 3 Z actual

NGR Rating Determination

Normally, we use a combination of R-X, depending on the grounding conditions i.e,
a. A highly inductive grounding is not preferred as this would lead to decrease in life of breaker contacts.
b. A highly resistive grounding would make the system unstable, and costly as the transformer is overdesigned, to insure that
it can take excessive fault current, incase the resistor falls.
Where X/R = 3 is good value in order to avoid the above mentioned problems so,

the calculated resistor ohm R = X/3

86.603
= = 28.867667 Ω
3
the selscted resistor ohm 30 Ω.
Calculate the actual neutral system impedance and grounding current fault

the combined Z of the Connected NGR with the ZigZag Transformer = 𝑥 +𝑅

Z actual of system in ( ohm) = √( (86.603)^2 + (30)^2)

Z actual of system in ( ohm) = 91.652 Ω

Maximum fault current IS.C =( )/ 𝑥 +𝑅

30
IS.C =( )/√( (86.603)^2 + (30)^2)
