Position Description

Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Principal and in compliance with the Education Act and CBE
regulations:

• Establishes clear objectives and outlines for courses of study, following curriculum
guidelines or requirements of Alberta Education, and communicates these objectives
to students. Prepares for assigned classes, and demonstrates written evidence of
preparation upon request. Prepares materials for learning, and classrooms for
activities, as appropriate.
• Instructs using a variety of instructional approaches appropriate for grade level,
student needs and program focus. Plans and conducts activities for a balanced
program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with
opportunities to observe, question, and investigate. Assigns lessons and corrects
homework.
• Observes and evaluates students' performance, behavior, social development, and
physical health. Prepares, administers, and grades a variety of student evaluative
tools such as projects, tests, assignments in order to evaluate students' progress.
Maintains accurate, complete, and correct student records as required.
• Establishes and enforces rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order and
safety among the students for whom they are responsible, under the guidance of the
Principal. Enforces all administrative policies and rules governing students.
• Meets with other professionals to discuss individual students' needs and progress.
Confers with parents or guardians, other teachers, counselors, and administrators in
order to discuss children's progress and resource needs, and to resolve students'
behavioral and academic problems, as appropriate.
• Confers with other staff members to plan and schedule lessons promoting learning,
following approved curricula. Collaborates with other teachers and administrators in
the development, evaluation, and revision of school programs. Attends professional
meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops in order to
maintain and improve professional competence. Attends staff meetings, and serves
on staff committees as required.
• Prepares students for later grades by encouraging them to explore learning
opportunities and to persevere with challenging tasks. Adapts teaching methods and
instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests. Prepares and
implements remedial programs for students requiring extra help. Instructs and
monitors students in the use and care of equipment and materials, in order to prevent
injury and damage. Provides special needs students with assistive devices,
supportive technology, and assistance accessing facilities such as restrooms, as
necessary.
• Plans and supervises class projects, field trips, visits by guest speakers or other
experiential activities, as appropriate, and guides students in learning from such
activities. Uses computers, multi-media, and other equipment and materials to
support the learning process. Organizes and supervises recreational and other
activities as appropriate, to promote physical, mental, and social development.
Sponsors extracurricular activities such as clubs, student organizations, and
academic contests, as appropriate. Performs supervisory duties, as assigned, such as
hall, cafeteria and playground monitoring, and bus loading and unloading.
• Plans assignments for Education Assistants, Special Education and other classroom
support staff as appropriate, and assists the Principal in their supervision and
evaluation of performance.
• Performs other related tasks as appropriate, including organizing materials,
displaying students' work, as assigned
Qualifications

Education and Experience

• Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate


• Bachelor of Education Degree or equivalent recognized by Alberta Education
• Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and lesson design, teaching and
instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of student learning
• Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability,
personality, and interests; learning and motivation
• Knowledge and awareness of group behavior and dynamics, societal trends and
influences, human migrations, ethnicity, and cultures
• Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the
meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.

Police Information Clearance: Applicants new to the Calgary Board of Education WHO ARE

• Copy of Valid Trade Certificate
• Copies of other valid licenses and certificates (e.g. First Aid)
