 Hajro and colleagues (2021) looked migration with an economic point of view

General

 Global migration is part of our growing and ever-so changing society

o So does the population (it’s increase)
o Economic hardships and inequalities as well as social and political changes in a
community MAY change the flow of the migration. Migration, then, has always been
connected to acute and long-term economic and social events.
 Global migration can be best understood if we look at the interplay of different lenses. In this
case we have the macro-level and individual level of analysis.

Macro-level

 Most migrants end up as part of the workforce (2/3)—labor migrants.

 Migrants become a crucial subject of change in their organization and society which they live in
 They then become a subject of controversy in social and political debates—policy making.
 Societal and political shifts in host countries due to migration—has also something to do with
policy making
 Institutional and cultural aspects are then affected due to these shifts
 These changes poses significant opportunities

Individual level

 Career transition of migrants

o From doctor to nurse
 Barriers of skilled migrants
o Discrimination
o Lengthy process for approval of migration
o Psychological and behavioral aspect of migrants
o Mental health and physical health needs
o Inclusion of migrants during a global crisis

Takeaway

 The article provided a comprehensive background of the interplay of different level of analysis of
global migration in the economic aspect. From what I can see, even though it is more focused on
economy and a single subject of global migration—which are our migrant workers—it still
encompasses other aspects such as political, social, and psychological facet of migration. For
example, just the mere fact that migrants are working in a host country already have a lot of
implications such as protecting the rights of the workers (individual level of analysis) while still
preserving the autonomy of the country (macro-level of analysis) when making a foreign policy;
in this example we can see that political affairs are very much included here because, of course,
we’re talking about the migrants and the government of the host country, and the fact that
migrants are allowed to work in the country indicates diplomacy between these 2 countries. Just
like the definition of globalization, different facets of global migration are always meshed
together—they are intertwined and are inseparable. Concentrating only on one aspect can
prevent us from fully understanding the complex nature of migration.
