Introduction

Introduction
The DISOCONT is a very versatile electronics family that is desig-
ned for continuous weighing and feeding applications and discon-
tinuous batching processes. The system performs all measuring
and controlling tasks necessary for weighing, feeding or batching
including:

n Measuring the transducer and sensor signals

n Controlling feeder motors and auxiliary devices (e.g. scrapers).
n Communication with other units, PC and plant control
via different fieldbus systems
n Operation via operator panel, PC/plant control or
manual-system
n Event report
n Data logging
n Report generation

DISOCONT has also many advantages because of its flexibility

due to the modular design and can be used for
– volumetric feeders
– gravimetric feeders
– continuous feeders
– discontinuous feeders

With the DISOCONT you can build a loss-in-weight feeder, stan-

dard weighfeeder, solids flow meter, Coriolis measuring system,
belt weighers and batching systems. You can also use it for bat-
ching processes.
This system also provides you with all of the electronic and me-
chanical features necessary in up-to-date equipment :

n High weighing accuracy

n EMC protection
n RFI suppression
n Noise immunity
n Meeting CE requirements
n Meeting EN 600068
n Operation in hazardous areas (electronics in safe area)
n All operating parameters on one memory card
n Operation from 24V DC up to 230V AC

Another strong point of the DISOCONT is its easy handling, a fea-

ture which is becoming even more important with today*s con-
cepts in plant control such as:

n Auto configuration with plug and play to fieldbus systems

n Intuitive graphical user interface for operation and service
n Fault tolerance
n In/out channels are software configurable

Introduction

n Manual operation (bypass) possible

Reduced cabling keeps system costs down. Among the various

advantages due to the system design are:

n Extensive diagnostics, either local or remote via modem

n Minimal service and spare part handling: there are only a few
different hardware components, the different functionality is
mostly provided by software
n Simple replacement of faulty electronic, components because
actual operating parameters reside on memory cards
n No re-adjustment necessary when replacing faulty modules

The DISOCONT consists of new software and hardware specially

designed for keeping the overall costs of the system low. It starts
with the mounting: there is no external cabinet necessary, all com-
ponents can be mounted at the feeder itself. Due to the use of
fieldbus systems, there are only a few connections necessary
therefore reducing the costs for mounting and cabling. Of course
there are several different configurations possible (e.g. with cabi-
net mounting). Nevertheless in all those configurations only two
basic hardware components are used to reduce the number of
spare parts. The EasyServe diagnostic and service software with
its intuitive interface reduces maintenance costs.

Configurations Options

Configurations
The DISOCONT family consists of the system unit VSE and
several optional units, which can be combined to form a working
system optimized for your process. The optional units include ad-
ditional I/O unit VEA, control unit VLB, several fieldbus modules
and two different local control units VLG.
The system unit VSE performs all tasks including the measure-
ment and control depending on its software. This unit can be
equipped with a module for one of the standard fieldbuses. One
local bus is always built in and used for connecting other
DISOCONT units or peripheral devices.
An optional unit for additional input/output is the VEA connected
to the VSE via the local bus. It is necessary, if a regulated
material input at the feeder is desired or if the panel-mounted
version is used.
The most cost effective solution for system configuration is to use
local mounting with an integrated motor drive. In this case you get
a compact system with a greatly reduced cabling overhead and
low overall costs. A second advantage is that problems with EMC
and RFI are considerably lower in this configuration, because no
cable is required between motor and frequency controller. Unfortu-
nately, this system design is not suitable for all configurations. It
depends on the availability of integrated drives, whether explosion
proofness has to be achieved, etc. Nevertheless with DISOCONT
you have the freedom of choosing between several different com-
binations for instrumentation and mounting.
Options
You can use the DISOCONT as a stand-alone unit for a single
feeder or as a feeding system. You can also combine several
DISOCONTs into one system, or combine different systems (e.g. a
DISOCONT with a MULTICONT MASTER). Of course a combina-
tion of different systems via fieldbus and centralized plant control
is always possible.
In principle you have two different options for operating your
DISOCONT:
n Use a VSE with fieldbus plug-in card and operate DISOCONT
via plant control.
n Use a VSE together with an control unit VLB for parameter
input, process control and display output.

The system set-up is usually done with a PC equipped with the

EasyServe program. For connection to a PC the built-in RS 232
interface is used. When using plant control for operation, the VSE
must be equipped with a fieldbus plug-in card.
In all configurations, you can expand the system with a local
control unit VLG for bypassing the DISOCONT. With these units,
manual operation (e.g. for service and maintenance) is possible.
There are two versions available for the VLG: one with manual
control for variable speed drive (VLG 20100), a second for sys-
tems with up to 4 manually controlled drives (VLG 20110).

Configurations Group Mode

In the following you will find a short description of the different

instrumentation possibilities according to different applications.
Single Mode
In this case only one feeder is used and controlled by DISOCONT.
For operation you have the above mentioned options of using a
PLC or plant control via fieldbus operator panel and a PC for
parameter input.

Due the flexibility of the DISOCONT you can easily integrate more
than one feeder equipped with DISOCONT into a bigger system.
There is even the freedom of choosing among the different field-
buses described in the next section. The DISOCONT units are
connected to the fieldbus system via one unit with a plug-in card,
internal communication is done with a local bus. Of course the
different operating modes already mentioned are available in this
configuration as well.

Similar to group mode you can use the DISOCONT in an environ-

ment where other Schenck MULTICONT systems are available. In
this case a fieldbus module with MULTICONT SE-Bus in the VSE
is mandatory.

Network Connections
Communication to external systems, (e g. plant control), is done
via several variable plug-in fieldbus cards for the different indus-
trial networks. The cards are inserted into the system unit VSE
which handles all further communication to sub-units (e.g. to an
I/O unit VEA) via an internal network, the built-in local bus. There
are four commonly used cards available for the fieldbus systems.
They are:
n SE-Bus, Modbus, J-Bus, 3964R
n CAN-Bus (DeviceNet Protocol)
n INTERBUS-S
n PROFIBUS-DP

With these boards you can build a fieldbus that meets your needs
and is compatible with the network that is already available at your
company. When using the DISOCONT in conjunction with the
Schenck MULTICONT, select the SE-Bus card.
Even though there are many differences among fieldbus systems,
every bus system is a network between different devices. Some
aspects always have to be considered: cable types, topology and
whether termination is necessary.
Most networks, also the built-in local bus, use a simple line topolo-
gy (Fig. 4) with daisy-chaining. An exception is the INTERBUS
which must have a daisy-chained ring topology. Another pos-
sibility is the star topology (right diagram in Fig. 4). The individual
extension modules, bus systems and standards are detailed on
pages 32ff. The built-in local bus uses a line topology with drop li-
nes at which branching with star topology is allowed or installation,
please observe the following restrictions:

n The maximum length for drop lines including branches is 6m.

n Maximum number of drop lines is 12.

Another important point is the termination at each end of a net-

work. ”End” means the first and the last physical device on the
bus, most remotely located from one another. It does not refer to
the address set. For the local bus, jumper W500 is used to enable
this termination. For details, please see individual units local bus
descriptions. For the other buses (e.g. SE-Bus or PROFIBUS),
check the item dealing with the according plug-in card.

Fig.: 5 Structure of the local bus

With every bus system, the “controller” for the DISOCONT system
unit (VSE) can be located anywhere in the system. There is no
need to have it at an end of the network.
DEVICENET expects the bus interface module to be supplied via
the bus cable. With the local bus, supply is via the VEA or VLB
20120 assembly bus cable. If none of these devices is connected
to bus, module has to be supplied discretely (24VDC, 40mA).

Configurations Group Mode

In the DISOCONT system, the wires for incoming and outgoing

bus lines are clipped onto the same terminal, so that the bus is un-
interrupted also if the bus connector is withdrawn. In variable con-
figurations where stations are to be removed from bus during
operation, it is useful to locate the terminal resistors on an external
connector and not on the p.c. board.
Since the Profibus cable is connected via the supply line, the ter-
minal resistor no longer operates properly if the connector is with-
drawn. Therefore, install a permanently available station on cable
end, for instance, a power unit.

If two wires on one terminal are not desired, provide an external

terminal box for the continuous bus line and guide a spur line from
terminal box to feeder. For admissible spur line length, see specifi-
cation of the particular bus.
Mounting Options
There are various DISOCONT mounting configurations.

Local Mounting
This configuration consists of the system unit VSE and, if neces-
sary, the additional input/output unit VEA for input flow control
such as prefeeder both mounted at the feeder in a small glass fi-
ber reinforced housing sealed to IP65. Depending on the type of
feeder it can be integrated into the mechanics. A field housing
operator unit VLB can be used.
Local mounting of DISOCONT gives the highest advantage in re-
spect of installation expense.

Local Cabinet Mounting

In this distributed manner the system unit VSE is mounted at the
feeder and the I/O unit VEA is usually clip-mounted on DIN rails in
cabinet with a maximum of 500m cable distance from the feeder.
An operator unit VLB can be used in this case as well and is nor-
mally mounted at the door of the cabinet. Again for this configura-
tion all advantages and possibilities for the VSE like glass fiber
reinforced housing sealed to IP65 and mounting inside the sup-
port structure can be utilized. A different housing for the cabinet
mounted VEA and the VLB ensures optimum handling inside the
cabinet.
Cabinet Mounting
In this configuration all components are mounted inside a cabinet.
Both the VSE and, if the unit is necessary, the VEA are either
rail or wall-mounted. In this case, both housings are optimized for
easy handling inside of a cabinet. A control unit VLB as a panel
version can be used as well.
The maximum cable distance from the cabinet to the feeder is
500m in this case.

Basic Diagrams
In the following, the basic diagrams for two different configura-
tions are shown. Figure 6 shows a small system configuration and
figure 7 shows a more complex system.

Connection Considerations
The design of a DISOCONT system is quite simple yet versatile
due to the small number of different devices. Nevertheless you
should thoroughly check in every case, which cables are required
and whether the number and size of the cables you want to use fit
into the cable glands available (see table at item “Accessories/Re-
commended Cables”).

When checking the technical details of the different units, you will
find that for each output (and input) the corresponding connec-
tor type is indicated (e.g. Phoenix MSTB, 3.5mm spacing.) Every
type has a limitation for the maximum wire cross section which
can be mounted. For Phoenix MSTB 5mm spacing connectors,
the maximum wire cross section is 2.5mm2; for MSTB, 3.5mm
spacing, 1.5mm2.

Cable Fixation
For optimum noise suppression and the best EMC, the proper ca-
ble fixation is essential. Please observe the following recommen-
dations for cable fixation and cable types. The correct cable
fixation is indicated in Fig. 7. Under each cable gland are several
slots inside the DISOCONT bottom sheet. When inserting the ca-
ble clamp into these slots, the clamp presses the cable shielding
against the housing thus providing a correct connection of the
shielding with the ground. The M-shaped holes can also be used
for strain relief with cable binders.

The DISOCONT system unit performs all tasks necessary for
measurement and control. The unit can be expanded by a field-
bus adapter card. All parameters (configuration etc.) are saved to
the VSM memory card. On power failure the dynamic values will
be saved as well. The unit must be mounted in a VFG or VEG
housing in order to ensure that live parts are out of touch. For use
as scale control unit, a VSM memory card is required. For use as
I/O system with VIO software, no memory card is necessary.

Local Bus Address Setting

The circuit board has two rotary switches for selecting one of the
possible 64 addresses for the local bus. The setting of the S2
switch has to be multiplied by 10 (x10 indicatedon cover plate),
and the setting of the S1 switch (x1 indicated on cover plate) has
to be added to calculate the selected address.
The first VSE in a DISOCONT local bus has address 01, the se-
cond 02 etc. See other units for their respective addresses, third
party units or extensions must have addresses above 30.
If the local bus is not connected, W500 remains in position
2-3.

with terminal resistors. To do so, set jumper W500 to position 1-2.
Factory setting is 2-3.
Provided for testing, jumper W100 must be in position 2-3 in nor-
mal mode.

Address Setting
After power-up, the welcome text “Schenck Process DISOCONT
Operator Panel” is displayed for some seconds. Operate red
ENTER key to display and change set address.
Return to normal mode by operating ENTER once again.

Field Bus Interfaces

Field Bus Interfaces

General Information
The fieldbus is used for the control of the Disocont via a plant con-
trol.
All field-bus interfaces are plug-in cards for the system unit VSE.
Depending on the fieldbus system used there are some restric-
tions to observe: length of cables, bus termination etc. You will find
details in the technical data section of the corresponding bus. To
ensure optimal EMC interference protection, we recommend to
use only cables specified for the according fieldbus system.
Please observe the hints in chapter Configurations/Network con-
nections.
n disconnect all cables from the VSE
n remove cover plate (shielding)
n exchange the distance bolts with the bolts provided with the
fieldbus card
n configure the card with the jumper
n insert the card so that the plug connects
n fasten the card with distance bolts
n mount the cover plate again.

ATTENTION!
To protect the p.c. board from damage, tighten all pins using a 5.5
mm socket wrench.

With each installation set, a label with identification terms is

shipped. Please glue the label into the fieldbus frame of the
cover plate.

Multiple Bus Model VSB 20100

Multiple Bus Model VSB 20100

The module can be plugged into the VSE to provide an interface to
one of the following bus systems:
n SE-Bus for connection to Schenck MULTICONT
n Modbus/J-Bus
n 3964R

Due to the specifications for these bus systems, the connection

with two or four wires as well as the communication speed is diffe-
rent. Although the hard- and software for all buses is on-board,
only one bus at any one time can be used. The selection is made
via jumpers, see fig. 29 .

The first and last device on all buses must have a bus termination
(e.g. W500 and W501 are set to 1-2). The terms first and last refer
to the physical first and last unit, not to the addres set on the devi-
ces themselves.

PROFIBUS-DP Module VPB 20100

PROFIBUS-DP Module VPB 20100

The module can be plugged into the VSE to provide an interface to
PROFIBUS-DP. Designed and certified in accordance with DIN
19245 and EN 50170 Part 2, the module caters for an automatic
baud rate recognition of up to 12 Mbit/s (12Mbaud).
With baud rates smaller than 12Mbaud, the number of bus stations
is limited only by the required cycle time and the address. For
12Mbaud, the following physical limitation applies: Number of sta-
tions x cable length in m <2000. Moreover, the maximum cable
lengths indicated in the PROFIBUS baud rate specification apply.
The circuit board has two plug-ins for the bus connection. In the
DISOCONT system, plug X20 is used.
Please keep in mind that the first and last device on a PROFI-
BUS-DP system must have a bus termination. In this case set
W500 and W501 to 1-2 to enable termination.
Attention: both jumpers must be set to the same position.

Note:
If the last actively terminated slave is removed from bus, the entire
bus may be disturbed, particularly in the case of alternating scales.
This problem can be avoided with the use of a separate active ter-
minal resistor, e.g. Siemens ordering number 6ES7
972-0DA00-0AA0.
You can also order the terminal resistor from Schenck by stock
number V014298.B01.

Service Bus and Remote Diagnostics

Service-Bus: Access to all feeders without necessity to plug into
the interesting one.
Remote Diagnostic: Access round the world or inside a bigger
plant.
The figure shows the interconnection of the devices. The conver-
ters RS232-RS485 must be mounted close to the VSE, or the PC
(cable <12m). This might require additional field housings in a me-
chatronic arrangement. For smaller installations, all converters
could be mounted in one enclosure. The RS485 bus can be exten-
ded up to 1200 m.
With the help of standard telephone modems, remote access is
possible.
Converters RS232-RS485 are commercial standard components
that include automatic detection of flow direction into the RS485
bus. We suggest to use Type SSW-520A of make Spectra.

Accessories Sealing of Control Boxes (Protection Type)

Accessories
Sealing of Control Boxes (Protection Type)
Our control boxes are highly protected to ingress of water and
dust. When used in areas with dust explosion hazard (dust Ex),
the type of protection is essential for compliance with the Ex regu-
lations.
To ensure the high degree of protection, observe the following:
n Observe the specified range for cable screwed connections. In
the safe area, the sealing ring can be replaced; with “approved”
screwed connections, the latter must be exchanged complete-
ly.
n With non-used cable screwed connections, press sealing plug
into screwing to completion. To do so, remove clamping nut
and press in plug flush with the outer screwing edge . Re-
place clamping nut and tighten.
n In critical locations, e.g. wet and dirty areas below a road
weighbridge, apply pure silicone grease to seal in cover and to
cable gland sealing rings.

Service hint: Sealing areas in fieldboxes

When opening a connector box after several year of operation,

check sealing areas in PG cable glands and cover joints. Apply
silicone grease to cover joints. When replacing a cable in the PG
screwed connection, replace sealing rubber.

Laptop Connecting Set (PC with Easyserve)

Fig.: 55 Wiring Diagram

The laptop connecting set is installed in the VSE as standard com-

ponent.
The connecting set is used whenever local conditions do not per-
mit the housing cover to be removed for VSE parametrization.
With the use of the connecting set, a laptop with the EasyServe
software can be plugged onto the closed VSE from the outside.
Consisting of a prewired device socket, connecting set VSC20108
is inserted into the existing 10mm hole of a VFG/VSE combination
or in Multifeed support in place of a cable screwed connection (PG
7) and connected on VSE terminal strip -X5.
A protective cap is affixed to an adjacent PG screwing with the use
of a captive nylon cord.
The PC connecting cable VSC 20107 is plugged into the device
socket from the outside and connected to the PC COM port via a
9-pin sub-D connector.
Safety Hint: In Dust-Ex Zones, the device socket has to point
downward in accordance with standard regulations. This means
that the connecting set must not be used with Multifed supports
mounted in Dust-Ex zones.

Use in the Hazardous Area Accessories

Use in the Hazardous Area

Use in the hazardous area requires great care to be taken, both by
the supplier and the plant user.
Make sure the assemblies are approved for use in the destined
dust- or gas-Ex area. Observe the prerequisites and maintenance
hints given in approval certificates and relevant documentation.
Always have maintenance and service work performed by skilled
and specially trained persons. If a potentially explosive atmos-
phere is present, never open housings and connectors and ensure
that interlocks of connectors and housings remain in place, save
with type of protection “i”. In case of fault, you can open housing
and perform measurements using suitable measuring devices.
Never use spark forming tools on aluminium housings. Clean
plastic parts using anti-static cleaners. Observe stickers warning of
special danger.

Never modify mechanical and electrical assemblies, the approval

for use in the hazardous area would be void. Use the assemblies
only in the zones specified on devices and in approval certificates,
or in less hazardous areas.
This also holds for type of protection “i” provided that the apper-
taining equipment (e.g. Z barrier) is present. If the protective
equipment is not available, the approval will be void. Mount
Ex-protective circuitries, or appertaining equipment (e.g. barriers,
switching amplifiers), in the safe area. To ensure proper potential
equalization, connect the protective conductor of the protective cir-
cuitry with the corresponding protective conductor in the safe area
using a potential equalization line.

If an assembly is not approved for use in the destined area, it can

still be mounted in the safe area. The equipment on scale and/or
the guards and isolators to be installed must still be approved for
use in the respective hazardous area.

The assemblies are approved in compliance with the EC directive

94/9/EG (ATEX). The generic standards are detailed in the appro-
val certificates and/or declarations by the manufacturer.

Pay heed to all local safety and accident prevention rules.

Accessories Use in the Hazardous Area

Gas-Ex Area Zone 1

Not approved for use in Zone 1, the weighing electronics must be
mounted in the safe area. The residual equipment, e.g. control
boxes, drives, sensors and other types of transducer must be
approved for use in Zone 1 and protected by suitable equipment
(disconnectors).
Controlled drives are designed with flameproof enclosure “d”.
Mains-supplied drives are designed for increased safety “e”. Load
cells and speed sensors are designed intrinsically safe “i”.

Gas-Ex Area Zone 2

Specially designed DISOCONT assemblies are suited for use in
Zone 2 (EN 50021). The compliance with the Ex regulations is
confirmed by a manufacturer’s declaration. According to the Ex
regulations, load cells and initiators are classified as simple equip-
ment, so that appertaining equipment (Z-barriers and switching
amplifiers) can be omitted.

Dust-Ex Area Zone 22

Specially designed DISOCONT assemblies are suited for use in
Zone 22. The compliance with the Ex regulations is confirmed by
a manufacturer’s declaration.
The residual equipment, e.g. drives, initiators, must be suitable for
