 In female it can be located below or inferior to the clitoris and above or superior to the
vaginal opening

Position During Catheterization


Male
- supine position
- knees should be flexed 5 feet apart
- hold the penis for about 90 degrees
Female
- supine position with knees flexed about 2 feet apart
- hips should be slightly externally
o to make the patient comfortable and at ease

 To execute proper body mechanics, if you are right-handed, stand at the right side of
the patient and if you are left-handed, stand at the left side of the patient.
 Open away from the sterile field or away from the stock tray to avoid unsterility of the
materials inside.
 Urine bag should be placed below the kidney basin
 Kidney basin is placed at the base of the buttocks to avoid spillage
 The purpose of inflating the balloon port is to ensure that the catheter is functional
 Lubricate 6-7 inches when it’s a male patient
 If female patient, lubricate 1-2 inches
Separate labia to visualize urinary meatus
Use non-dominant hand to touch the private part of the patient
Clitoris and vaginal opening

Male
Urinary Meatus is located at the Ventral tip of the penis
Observe characteristics of the urine
- Color
- Odor
- Consistency
Kink the catheter

Attach urine bag or uro bag to the catheter


Wipe the patients genitalia, upward to downward to avoid contamination
- One stroke only and then change another tissue paper for another stroke
Instruct the patient to drink 8-10 glasses of water

REMOVAL

After draping the patient, put down the side rail when removing indwelling catheter for
comfortability
Remove plaster using wet cotton
Amount to drain from the balloon is close to 10 or less but not less than 5
