3 Award 1 mark each for any acceptable answers:
a Award 1 mark for: because it is being treated as a proper noun – their
name is ‘the Folk’. [1]
b Award 1 mark for: the colony of animals that live along the river. [1]
4 Award 1 mark each for any acceptable answers:
a Award 1 mark for: the fox, heron and weasel. [1]
b Award 1 mark for: because they have always been the enemies of the
river folk – predators ever since they existed. [1]
5 Award 2 marks for: yes; the males scent the breeze
more carefully before going out; the mothers watch their young and sleep
more lightly. [2]
