went to London University and in 1906 he became a doctor. In 1915, Fleming married Sarah
McElroy, an Irish woman. They had one son. During the First World War, many soldiers died
in hospital because they didn’t have the right medicines. So after the war, Fleming tried to find
a drug that could help them. He worked for many years and in 1928 he discovered a new drug
and he called it “penicillin”. He later worked with an Australian and a German scientist to
develop a drug that doctors could use. In 1945, they won the Nobel Prize in medicine for their
work on penicillin.

“Sesame Street” has been called “the longest street in the world”. That is
because the television program can be seen in so many parts of the
world.
That program became one of America’s exports soon after it was shown
in New York in 1969.
In the United States more than six million children watch the program
regularly. Although some people do not agree to some parts of the
program, parents praise it highly.
Tests have shown that children have learned much from watching
“Sesame Street”. The children who watch it five times a week learn more
than those who watch it less. In the United States the program is shown
at different hours during the week in order to increase the number of
children who can watch it regularly.
The program uses songs, stories, jokes and pictures to give children a
basic understanding of numbers, letters and human relationships.
Why has “Sesame Street” been so much more successful than other
children’s shows? Many reasons have been suggested, such as the
educational theories of its producers, the support from both the
government and businessmen, and the full use of various kinds television
skills. Perhaps another important reason is that mothers watch “Sesame
Street” together with their children. This is partly because famous film
stars often appear on “Sesame Street”. But the best reason for the
success of the program may be that it makes every child watching it feel
able to learn. The child finds himself learning, and he wants to learn
more.
36. The “Sesame Street” has been called “the longest street in the
world” becaue it is_________.
38. In the United States many children can watch the program
regularly because_________.

The best way to improve the four skills: speaking, listening, reading, and
writing is to practice regularly. You should make use of every opportunity
to speak English with friends in class or at English speaking clubs or
ourselves in front of the mirror. Learning by heart all the words does not
help much if you do not read a lot because you will easily forget what you
have learnt. Reading books, listening to radio and watching films are
better ways to memorize words. Besides. English learners should not be
so shy because making mistakes is unavoidable in learning foreign
languages. Practicing speaking a lot is a good way to correct your
mistakes.

Along with jogging and swimming, cycling is one of the best all-round
forms of exercise. It can help to increase your strength and energy, giving
you more efficient muscles and a stronger heart. But increasing your
strength is not the only advantage of cycling. Because you’re not carrying
the weight of your body on your feet, it’s a good form of exercise for
people with painful feet or backs. However, with all forms of exercise it’s
important to start slowly and build up gently. Doing too much too quickly
can damage muscles that aren’t used to working. If you have any doubts
about taking up cycling for health reasons, talk to your doctor and ask for
his/her advice.
Ideally you should be cycling at least two or three times a week. For the
exercise to be doing you good, you should get a little out of breath. Don’t
worry that if you begin to lose your breath, it could be dangerous and
there must be something wrong with your heart. This is simply not true;
shortness of breath shows that the exercise is having the right effect.
However, if you find you are in pain then you should stop and take a rest.
A. it enables them to carry the weight of their body on their feet
B. it does not make them carry the weight of their body on their feet
A. gradually
B. quickly

The country is more beautiful than a town and pleasanter to live in. Many
people think so and go to the country for the summer holidays though
they can not live there all the year round. Some have a cottage built in a
village so that they can go there whenever they can find the time.Almost
every village has a church, the round or square tower of which can be
seen from many miles around. Surrounding the church is the churchyard
where people are buried.
The Village green is a wide stretch of grass, and houses or cottages are
built round it. Country life is now fairly comfortable and many villages

The Beatles
In the 1960s, the Beatles were probably the most famous pop group in
the whole world. Since then, there have been a great many groups that
have achieved enormous fame, so it is difficult now to imagine how
sensational The Beatles were at that time. They were four boys from the
north of England and none of them had any training in music. They
started by performing and recording songs by black Americans and they
had some success with these songs. Then they started writing their own
songs and that was when they became really popular. The Beatles
changed pop music. They were the first pop group to achieve great
success from songs they had written themselves. After that it became
common for groups and singers to write their own songs. The Beatles did
not have a long career. Their first hit record was in 1963 and they split up
in 1970. They stopped doing live performances in 1966 because it had
become too dangerous for them – their fans were so excited that they
surrounded them and tried to take their clothes as souvenirs! However,
today some of their songs remain as famous as they were when they first
came out. Throughout the world, many people can sing part of a Beatles
song if you ask them.
