1. SCOPE

1.1 This Engineering Instruction describe the 4.5kVA 11000/220 volt English Electric
'' Low Loss'' Transformers recently purchased and also details the Installation
Conditions for these transformers, the Serial Numbers of which are:-

TB 114688/1 to 12 inclusive and TA 11113/1

2.1 Core

The Core is wound from a continuous strip of cold rolled grain oriented steel, and is
not cut after completion, the coils being would direct on to the uncut core. This type
of construction takes full advantage of the grain orientation of the steel in that the
magnetic properties are much improved when the core is fluxed in the direction of
rolling, resulting in considerably lower losses.

2.2 Tapping

Tapping are provided on the L.V. Winding and the leads are brought to a paxolin
Terminal Board mounted inside the tank. The Terminals on this board are labelled Al
to A6 inclusive, and provide a Tapping range of plus or minus 2½ and 5%. No tap
change switch is provided.

In the case of Transformer Serial No. TA 11113/1 only two L.V. Bushings are fitted,
and to select the required Tap position it is necessary to remove the Tank lid and
make the following connections to the L.V. Bushings, inside the tank.

For plus 5% of L.V. Voltage, assuming the H.V Voltage to be 11000 volts, Terminals
A1 and A6 should be connected to their respective bushings. Connection of
Terminals A2 and A6 gives plus 2½, and Terminals A2 and A5 giive normal L.V.
Voltage. Minus 2½ of L.V. Voltage is obtained by connecting Terminals A3 and A5
to the L.V. bushings, and for Minus 5% of L.V. Voltage Terminals A3 and A4 should
be connected.

For Transformers TB 11468/1 to 12 inclusive, four L.V. bushings are provided on the
tank sides, and these are permanently connected to Terminals A1, A3, A4 and A6,
providing a Tapping range of plus of minus 5% by selection of the bushings.

For plus 5% of L.V. Voltage, the outgoing leads from the transformer should be
connected to Bushings A1 and A6. Normal L.V. Voltage is provided by connection
of the outgoing leads to Bushings A1 and A4, and if minus 5% of L.V. Voltage is
required, the outgoings leads should be connected to Bushings A3 and A4.

2.3 Tank

The transformers are of the hermetically sealed type and consequently no conservator
or breather is fitted. The Cold Oil level is marked inside the tank and a considerable
air space is available which acts as an air cushion for oil expansion.

In Transformers Nos. 11468/1 to 12, a dip stick is provided on the Tank lid for
checking the oil level.

2.4 Transformer Rating

Although nominally ratted at 4.5kVA these transformers are capable of carrying a

continuous load of 7.5kVA with a calculated maximum winding temperature rise of
630C above Ambient when measured by resistance.

3. Installation

3.1 These transformers must be installed at locations requiring a Single phase supply
where the peak load is in excess of 5kVA but is not greater than 7.5kVA.

3.2 A 35 amp Single phase 220 volt A.C.B. must be installed for use in conjunction with
the transformers.

3.3 Either a 25 amp Single phase 220 volt Long Range meter to B.S.S. 37/1937 or a 40
amp Single phase volt meter to B.S.S. 37/1952 must be installed for use with these
transformers.
