The Johari Window Model
The Johari Window is a simple technique that allows people to identify their strengths,
weaknesses, and blind spots. The exercise works like this:
1. A participant selects a set number of adjectives from a list they feel best describe
themselves
2. The participant then selects, from the same set of adjectives, the characteristics that
best describe another person

Let's get started!
Are you
ready?
Step 1: Create
a Johari's
window.
Template No. 1
Step 2: pick the 5 or 6 Peers are given the same
words that you feel
best describe you, list and they each pick 5 or
from the list below 6 adjectives they think
describe the subject.
Step 4: Add details.
You arrange the adjectives on the Johari Window based on awareness.
Here’s a summary of how to place the adjectives
Public– Adjectives selective by participant and peers are placed in Arena
Hidden– Adjectives selected by participant only are placed in Hidden.
Blind Spot – Adjectives selected by peers only are placed in Blind Spot.
Unknown – Adjectives not selected by anybody are placed in unknown.
Step 6: Review
and Feedback
Once everyone has finished, allow
each participant to review his/ her
Johari Window assessment and
compare notes between self and
team assessment.

How easy or difficult was it to select the adjectives to describe

How easy or difficult was it to select the adjectives to describe

your team members? Why?
3 After comparing feedback, what were you surprised by?
What can you do to reduce your Blind Spot and/or Facade, and

move those traits into your Arena instead?
How can you apply what you learned about you and

your teammates to improve collaboration?
There are no right or wrong
answers. The purpose of this
exercise is not o to provide a
score but to help people
uncover the areas that are
not visible to them.
