REDUCING FRACTIONS TO
LOWEST TERMS

A DepEd-BEAM Distance Learning Program supported by the Australian Agency for International Development
To the Learner

Hello, kids! It’s another day for you to learn. How do you feel
today? I hope you are ok!

Let’s Learn This

The module that I am going to share with you today is about

“Reducing Fractions to lowest Terms”. Fractions are easier to
understand if they are in simplest form or lowest term. You skill in
finding the greatest common factor (GCF) is applicable in this lesson.

Let’s Try This

Directions:
List down all the possible factors of each given number.
Number 1 is done for you.

Let’s Study This

Let’s read and study the problem below:

A woman spends 5/15 of her time everyday attending to the

needs of her children. On the other hand, a man spends 3/9 of his
time to support his family’s financial needs. What part of their
daily time do man and woman spend during their shared
responsibilities?

• The information asked for in the above problem is:

The part of the time of man and woman spend during their
should responsibilities.

• The given data are:

 5/15 and 3/9

Let us reduce 5/15 and 3/9 in lowest terms to know

the part of the time that man and woman spend during
their shared responsibilities.

Think of the largest possible number that will divide

both the numerator and the denominator of each
fraction. This will be done by finding the greatest
common factor (GCF) using the two methods.

A. Listing method.

• List all the possible factors of the numerator and

denominator.
• Identify the common factors.
• The biggest / largest common factor becomes the GCF.

- 30 -
In the problem, both man and woman append 1/3 of their daily time
during their shared responsibilities for the children.

Here are other examples:

Let’s Do This

Directions: List down all the factors of the numerator and the
denominator. Encircle the greatest common factor (GCF).
number 1 is done for you.

Let’s Do More

A. Directions: Reduce each fraction to lowest term. Write your

answer on the cone.

- 32 -
B. Directions: Encircle the fraction in lowest term in each set

Let’s Remember This

• To change or reduce fraction to its lowest term, simply divide

the numerator and the denominator by the greatest common
factor (GCF).

• A fraction is in the lowest term or simplest form if the greatest
common factor of the numerator and denominator is 1.

Let’s Test Ourselves

Directions: Read the question and solve for the correct answer.

1. What is the lowest term of 9/24?

2. How is 24/36 changed to lowest term?

3. Change 20/35 in simplest form.

4. 12/18 in simplest form is

5. The lowest term of 72/81 is

Let’s Consider This

What’s your score?

o If you got 4 – 5, proceed to the next module.

o If you got 3, do the “Let’s Enrich Ourselves”
o If you got below 3, review the whole module.
