WHAT ARE MANUFACTURING SOCIETIES ? :

Manufacturing societies are people or groups of people in a
community that manufacture and produce everything they
need in their every day life for themselves, using know-how
and materials that are available in the community . Each

community should produce all food , clothes , furniture,

homes , drinkable water , homes , medicines , boats and
other forms of transportation, wi-fi , renewable energy , tree-
planting etc , etc with absolutely no help from outside .
Those households or communities that produce more
products or services than they need should sell to other
households or communities at cheap and affordable prices .
The main purpose of manufacturing societies is to help
members of the community to attain a higher standard of
living and thus a better life . Manufacturing societies
should make a small profit to survive but profit-making is
not the main purpose of manufacturing societies .
Every human being is responsible for the development of
his/her home and his/her community. He/She should do
things him/herself to raise his/her GDP and his/her standard
of living . The Dr. Blyden PDF manufacturing societies
books teach people how to do things themselves inorder
to raise their GDP and elevate their standards of living .
There will be no extra help or advice from Dr. Blyden to
anyone , this will be practically impossible regarding the
size of the internet .

Accessible water supply is a human right : According to

the UN's Human Right to Water and Sanitation (HRWS)
"The human right to water entitles everyone to sufficient,
safe, acceptable, physically accessible and affordable water
for personal and domestic uses." The HRWS obliges
governments to ensure that people can enjoy clean, available,
6

accessible, and affordable water and sanitation ....From

Wikipedia .

99 percent of Sierra Leoneans do not have acces to clean ,

drinkable water every day . The majority have to walk
several kilometers to fetch water with jerry cans . Children
waste valuable time fetching water instead of studying .
People get neck pain and back pain due to carrying heavy
jerry cans on ther heads or on their arms . People are forced
to buy water in enviromentallly unfriendly plastic bottles
and plastic bags . Very poor people have less money for food
because they spend a lot on water . This situation exists not
only in Sierra Leone but also in other countries in Africa and
the world .

GROUND WATER INFO

Groundwater is water that collects beneath the surface of the

earth after rain has fallen . The rain water sinks through the
layers of earth (infiltration) and collects in aquifers . Aquifers
are rocks that are surrounded with water . Water that is
contained in aquifers is called groundwater . Groundwater
can often be reached from a few meters to about 10 meters
deep , but sometimes one has to dig deeper . The upper level
of groundwater is called the water table .

MANUFACTURING SOCIETY : HOW TO OBTAIN CLEAN ,

SAFE DRINKING WATER FOR YOUR HOME IN SIERRA
LEONE

1/ HOW TO DIG YOUR OWN WATER WELL

THE MATERIALS YOU NEED TO DIG YOUR

OWN WATER WELL

A/ A shovel

B/ A hoe

C/ A pickaxe

10

D/ Long wooden sticks

E/ Very long rope

F/ A bucket

11

HOW TO DIG AND CREATE YOUR WATER WELL

Choose an area on the ground with does not have large rocks
. Draw a circle which is about 1 m wide . Start digging a pit
inside the circle with the shovel . Dig from the periphery of
the pit towards the center . Use the hoe to dig , scrape and
level the walls of the pit (See photo above) . Use the pickaxe
when necessary to break rocks . Dig a deep pit . Use the
bucket to remove soil from the pit as you dig .
When the pit is about 1,5 m deep it is time make your
scaffold-ladder with a platform :

Scaffold-ladder with platform for standing on

12

How to make a scaffold-ladder : Use 3 long sticks to make

a scaffold-ladder with a platform as seen in the photo above .
Adjust the platform to the specific depth you require .
Attach the long rope to the bucket and lower it into the
pit .
Dig deeper and deeper , shovel the soil into the bucket and
let your helper at the surface raise it , empties it and so on .
You will reach the loam layer at about 4 meters deep.
Loam is a paste of clay , sand and gravel .
You have to dig deeper , beyond the loam layer to get to
the groundwater .
Groundwater is usually at 4 - 10 meters depth in Sierra
Leone . You might have to dig deeper in some places .
Keep digging until water starts coming into the pit .
The groundwater coming up into the well now is dirty ,
because it is mixed with clay and soil ,
Congratulations ! You have reached water .
The pressure of the water coming into the pit is low at this
stage so it is easier to bail out all the water in the pit when
you are working in it .
So you can now take a break and celebrate .
After your celebration you have to :
—- Build a circular wall of cement round the opening of the
well
—- Build the cover of your well
—- Plaster the inner wall of the well

13

—- Dig deeper below the water table to increase the pressure

of the water and get water gushing into your well
continuously
—- Pile rocks at the bottom of the well
—- Place the cover on your well
—- Draw and drink water from your well

HOW TO BUILD A CIRCULAR WALL ROUND THE

OPENING OF THE WELL

Place circular , cardboard forms round the edge of the

opening of the well . Mix broken stone , gravel, sand,
cement, and water to create liquid concrete. Pour the
concrete into the form and leave it to dry and harden .
Remove the cardboard form when the wall is dry and hard .

14

HOW TO BUILD THE COVER OF YOUR WELL

COVER OF WELL

Use cardboard or wooden planks to create a circular form for

the cover of your well as shown in the pictures above . Mix
broken stone , gravel, sand, cement, and water to create
liquid concrete. Pour the concrete into the form and leave it
to dry and harden . Remove the cardboard or wooden form
when the structure is dry and hard .

PLASTER THE INNER WALL OF YOUR WELL

Mix cement , sand , water and if you want lime to create a

paste called plaster . Use a masonry trowel to plaster the
inner wall as shown in the picture below . This will
strengthen the wall, prevent it from collapsing and keep the
water clean .

15

DIG DEEPER BELOW THE WATER TABLE

The water table is the upper level of the ground water . Dig
deeper below the water table to increase the pressure of the
water and get water gushing into your well continuously .

PILE ROCKS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE WELL

16

Pile rocks at the bottom of the well to strengthen the well

and prevent it from collapsing . Clean water will rise to the
surface and muddy water which is heavier will stay at the
bottom .

PLACE THE COVER ON YOUR WELL

Place the cement cover on your well as shown in the picture

above . Make a concrete floor around your well (as shown in
the picture) to beautify it .

DRAW WATER FROM YOUR WELL

17

Attach a rope to a bucket or jerry can , lower the bucket or

can into your well to fill it up with water .

DRINK WATER FROM YOUR WELL

18

Now you can drink water from your own well which you
have built with your own hands . Congratulations !

INFO ABOUT WELL WATER : Well water is groundwater

that has been purified by the layers of earth it has gone
through . So well water is safe to drink in most places in
Sierra Leone , Africa and the world . When the well begins to
dry up in the dry season , the well water can become brown
coloured or muddy . When your well water begins to look
dirty then it is time to build your own water purification filter
, that will be the next project .

ABOUT THIS WELL

This well was built by two young men in Freetown , Sierra

Leone . It took 2 weeks to build . They reached groundwater
at 6 meters depth . Ground water can be found everywhere
in Sierra Leone at 0 -10 meters deep . The 2 young men have
now provided their family with a continuous supply of clean
water forever . This family is now teaching other families in
their community how to dig their own wells . The other
families will also teach others and the ripple effect will
spread on .
The cost of digging this well was 0 USD . The only cost the
family had was for the cement , sand , gravel etc to line the
inner walls of the well and build the cement cover etc . This

19

family now has a steady supply of clean water 24 hours a day

, 365 days a year . They have raised their standard of living
many fold . This family is hoping to start a new
manufacturing society , do-it-yourself project soon .

ABOUT WATER : Water is one of the most essential elements

needed for the survival and development of the human being
. Without water there is no food, no agriculture, no wood or
concrete for construction , no medicines , no forests , no
seas , no fish , no life .
