Edits to Scene 3.

(pages 7-8)

There was a mistake with the script which didn’t clearly indicate the clerk’s arrival. Below are
the missing lines (on page 7 and indicated in bold). The CLERK and PARENTS both have
additional lines, and this will also obviously affect the timing of Gregor’s pre-recorded lines.
Really sorry about these mistakes!

FROM: Gregor: I have to work… I knew I was sick yesterday. (middle page 7)

[Three loud knocks]

MR. S: oh dear – that’s bound to be someone from the warehouse.

CLERK (from offstage): No, Mr. Samsa it’s the chief clerk.

[FAMILY rise, MRS. S opens the door, and the CLERK makes a long entrance from stage
left.]

CLERK: Good morning, Mrs Samsa. Young Mr Samsa did not arrive at work this morning, so
I thought I’d drop round and see what the trouble is.

MRS. S: I’m terribly sorry, but our son’s not feeling well – I don’t quite know what’s wrong
– it’s very unlike him – he’s very conscientious as you know – thinks of nothing but his
work.

CLERK: Hmm.

[CLERK walks further into the family space, looking around, picking up items from the
table as if inspecting them. The FAMILY are visibly panicked, offering the CLERK a seat and
GREGOR’s breakfast as GREGOR is heard struggling in his room.]

GREGOR: What

GREGOR: What a villain… Mustn’t lost consciousness now.

MRS. S: Gregor, the chief clerk is here. He’s worried why you aren’t at work
