TEXT
We live in an exciting age, The Internet of Things (IoT) is now introducing a hyperconnected world of
continuous and unbroken information exchange. One of the greatest (1) bottlenecks that stand in the
way of loT devices is the massive logistical and economic problem that batteries pose, To install,
maintain and replace billions of batteries is (2) by no means an elegant solution. Traditional forms of
energy storage such as batteries will not be able to power the billions of sensors that will be deployed
in the near future. Energy harvesting, also known as ambient power, promises to be an efficient solution
to this energy bottleneck
‘At any point in time, there is energy all around us that goes unused. For instance, given the
preponderance of electronics and mobile devices, we are constantly (3) bathed in an ocean of radio
waves and Wifi signals. Our surroundings are rich in potentially usable energy that could power our
electronics if (4) hamessed and stored. In fact, anew app, launched by Dutch software designer Richard
\Vijgen called Architecture of Radio, allows us to visualize this massive, invisible field of energy around
us, at all times. These signals represent just one form of ambient energy. Ambient energy could also be
teneray in the form of light, heat, sound or vibration, For instance, most power stations in the world
employ a turbine that converts heat to mechanical energy, which is then converted to eleetricity, This
process is very inefficient, with over (5) swoethirds ofthe energy input being lost othe surroundings in
ire form of heat. Energy can potentially be harvested from any of these sources, although not all of
them are technologically feasible at this point.

Course Questions
1. Give the expression that defines the effective mass m* of a particle from its dispersion
relation E(k)
What is the type of a semiconductor doped with phosphorus (P)? Justify.
Give an example of an atom that can be used as an acceptor in a semiconductor.
Justify.
Problem 1
In a semiconductor, at temperature T, the concentration n of electrons excited to the
conduction band and the concentration p of holes in the valence band are given by:

where kn is the Boltzmann constant, h is the reduced Planck constant, m? is the effective
mass of an electron, mi, is the effective mass of a hole, Eis the energy at the conduction
band edge and By is the energy at the valence band edge.
1. What does the quantity jt represent?”
2, Find the expression of the product np as a function of the energy gap Ey,
3. Find, for an intrinsic seaniconductor:
a) the expressions of the concentrations n; and py of electrons and holes as a fune-
tion of the energy gap Ey
») the expression of the quantity 1 as a funtion of the ratio m,/mg
In the following,-we are interested in any intrinsic seiniconductor for which the quantity
is located‘exactly in the middle ofthe forbidden gap, at a temperature T= 300K
‘We assume that electrons and holes have the same collision time (ie. 74 = 7).
4. Find, in this case, the relation between ‘the effective m:
nel mi,
5. Deduce the relation between the algebraic mobilities je and 1,
Consider a rod-shaped specimen of rectangular cross-section placed in a magnetic indue-
tion B parallel to the z-axis. The dimensions of the rod are Ly = dem, Ly = Lem and
Lz = 0.5em. By applying an electric field parallel to the x-axis, an electric current density
je flows through the rod (Figure bellow).
