Book title: Message in a bottle. Author: Nicholas Sparks.
Total pages: 352.

Part A - Complete the two parts below:

1. Write a summary of the book (min. 10 lines – max. 20 lines). Teresa Osborn is a
divorced columnist with a son. One day, she finds a bottle with a message inside
that was a letter written by “Garrett” for his late wife. Intrigued, Theresa sets
out to find out more about this man. When they meet, they fall in love, but since
they live in different states, they take turns visiting each other. But one day
they realized that constantly traveling was not working for them. They argue
about all this, and Garrett finds the letters he wrote to his wife in Theresa's
drawer. They part for a while, but when she wants to settle things with him, she
discovers that Garrett had gone sailing on his boat during a storm and died.

2. Write a short biography of the author. Make sure to include the author’s
accomplishments and his/her other books. Nicholas Sparks was born on
December 31, 1965, in Omaha, Nebraska. Sparks has said that one of his
late sisters were the inspiration for the main character Jamie Sullivan in his
novel “A Walk to Remember”. He and his ex-wife are Catholics and are
raising their children in the Catholic faith. (15%)

Part B - Complete the four items below:

1. Put yourself in the main character’s shoes! Pick one situation where the
protagonist had to decide and explain how YOU would have reacted? When
Theresa finds the bottle with the message inside, I would not have
published that letter; perhaps, I would have kept it in a box or even thrown
it back into the sea, but I would never have published it. (20%)
2. Is there a lesson or a moral in this book? If so, explain how the author gets
his/her message across. If not, what do you think is the author’s reason for
writing this book? I think the message of this book is to be somebody’s true
north. (20%)
3. Would this book make a good movie? Yes, since it is very sentimental and
emotional.
If you were the casting director, who would you pick for the leading roles
(friends? Actors?) If I were the director, I would cast myself in the lead
role. I identify a lot with the main character, and my family for the other
roles. (10%)
4. Neatness and format. (10%)
