BepHakynsipHa peniria «Popular Orthodoxy» and Identity in Soviet and Post-Soviet Russia: Ideology, Consumption and Competition The paper focuses on the cultural history and social meaning of Soviet antireligious cam- paigns in the village, During the Soviet period, formal religious observance was subordi- nated to state regulation. But controlling religious and Para-religious practices outside «cult buildings» was more difficult. Before 1917, such practices had been entrenched in everyday life, attracting the hostility of church authorities, particularly during the period of intensive modernization that took place under Peter Land Empress Anne. Under Soviet rule, the as- sault on what was seen as «superstition» continued. Researchers of Russian rural culture have sometimes argued that Soviet antireligious campaigns in the village resulted in the re- vival and spread of «pre-Christian» or «archaic» and «irrational» beliefs and rituals, With regard to the material considered in this Paper, this statement is not accurate. What one can observe here is the reorganization of religious consumption, and the creation of new informal social networks managed by local religious leaders, without any special relation to imaginary «pre-Christian» culture. Moreover, the particular and hostile interest in these religious practices on the part of Soviet authorities can be explained in terms of social discipline rather than rationalism, modernization or the influence of Enlightenment ideas.
