1. At the first level, DESCRIBE what you have actually seen and done during your
experience. Look back at the experience. Provide facts.
The clinical exposure took place at Purok Medalla Milagrosa, Brgy. Villamonte, Bacolod
City. Before we arrived in the community, we were all excited and anxious at the same time for
it was our first time being immersed in an actual community. When I arrived at the house of the
family that I was assigned to, I was indeed consumed by nervousness however, their hospitality
made it easier for me to pull myself together. My family was the Ascura Family, headed by Mr.
Elvis Ascura Sr., 63 years old, and his wife, Mrs. Jeslynda Ascura, 63 years of age as well. They
live in a compound wherein their children are also residing in the same compound but in
different households. During the assessment, I was very happy that my clients were very open
to giving me all the information needed in Worksheet C, and during the interview, we also
shared our own experiences that we both can relate to. To be honest, it felt like I was only
talking to a close neighbor and it felt great knowing that there is respect and honesty all
throughout the visit. To be honest, I was not shocked by the community and the situation there
because I already anticipated it given that I have visited places like that before. What made the
experience memorable is that the community, in general, was very open, they accepted us with
optimistic, hopeful, and joyful hearts.
2. At the second level, it requires that you REFLECT upon your reactions to what you have
seen and done. Interpret the experience. Analyze the outcomes.
During the home visits, it felt nice to know that within just a short span of time, you were able
to help your adopted family in making sure that they take care of their health above all. When I
was about to conduct my health teaching, a saddening event happened the sister of Mrs.
Jeslynda died. I was not able to conduct health teaching in actuality but I made sure that the
brochure that I will give them contained everything that they need to know so that they will
still be informed about what their body needed to become optimally healthy. During the core
group formation, my family was not able to come due to the said unfortunate event however,
the rest of the community who participated were very cooperative. We can definitely see their
eagerness to participate and be one in planning for the health of their community. It made us
truly happy that they gave us the opportunity to facilitate them and that they gave us a chance
to get into their lives to connect with them even for a short while.
What connections do you see between this experience and the concepts/ideas/theories
that you have learned in your nursing education and your Lasallian values as a whole?
As a Lasallian student-nurse, aside from being fully equipped with knowledge and skills, we
carry all throughout our values that make us better individuals not just for ourselves, but also
for other people. These values make us true Lasallians by spirit and deed. During this
experience, we applied the Spirit of Zeal by building a connection with God and ourselves and
the clients, we uplifted the Communion in Mission by collaborating and helping one another all
throughout, and we upheld the Zeal for Service by serving the community through Community
Health Nursing.
3. The third level is to APPLY a context and set future goals. What does this
activity/situation mean in the broader context?
Community Health Nursing helps us in a way wherein people who cannot afford to go
into hospitals and those who are not aware of their health status will be assisted and assessed.
The main context of Community Health Nursing is to Promote a healthy lifestyle by Preventing
Disease and Health Problems. It is important that this context is upheld in the community
setting where we live in. This starts in our own homes. We have to promote a healthy lifestyle
in our own selves and let our families be attached to our main objectives as well. Once a healthy
lifestyle is promoted in all households, in a broader context, disease prevention will be
achieved, people will have control over their health, and death rates will be decreased. And in
another broader context, these people need our help to be educated about their health and be
informed of what has to be done as well as be informed of the DOH programs that they might
need at the moment or in the future. Keeping them informed of the benefits that are offered by
the government is also one way of being aware and also a step of disease prevention and health
rehabilitation.
