Action

June 01, 2023

The day commenced with a coat of warm welcome and greetings by our clinical instructors and
my fellow student nurses. This was followed by the usual morning offering prayer and the
nurse’s prayer to dedicate the outcome of the day to the Lord. We were then oriented and
reminded of the rules with an emphasis of strict adherence and compliance intending to ensure a
smooth, productive, and robust workforce during our two-week run in our community duty. Dr.
Raymond then cemented himself as our community instructor in this brand new course. He then
assessed our individual expectations, and checked our PHN bags for their completeness and to
replenish when they are lacking. At around 7:45, the group then headed to Capatan, Tuguegarao
City with a tangerine-shaded jeep that made it seem like the essence of the duty would really
revolve around our nursing care, and not for comfort and fun. Before the conduction of DBHS
and interview, we initially roamed around the zones that we were assigned to which were in zone
1 and zone 2. Sweat dripping and the haze of the sun was flaring, we could not tolerate the
hamper of the weather which plunged us to portion the tasks and to divide the group into two to
fast-track the process. Ablaze with an uncontainable enthusiasm, the group then started with the
DBHS and conduction of initial interview utilizing the baseline data survey form as well as to
conduct division of behavioral health services to the constituents of the said barangay to get our
feet wet in this brand new rotational endeavor. Strictly, we were advised to assess at least 8
individuals in order to ensure efficiency. As the day progressed, we were then called back by
our clinical instructor for us to have our lunch break. After the quick break, we continued with
the interview and the day concluded with a post-conference back at school.

June 02, 2023

Out of sheer generosity, an ample amount of time was given to us by our community instructor
in order to maximize the time in the formulation of our community files as well as our session
module. We were able to finish 85% of the module but the preparatory factors including the
props, the assistance to be allocated, as well as the tasking were much more of the problem for
us, but we still had the whole day to accomplish them. At around 3:30, the group was able to
submit the English version of the session module, the invitation, as well as the communication
letter. The curtains then closed for the day.

June 03, 2023

Whacked and worn out, the duty still goes on. We started off with the usual morning prayer,
checking of attendance, and pre-conference. Same feeling of excitement was radiating over my
body as we went off to Sta. Maria Isabela for the continuation of the interview and DBHS. We
then met client IT in zone 2 of Capatan. I had a thorough interview with her, longer than any of
the households I ever set my foot on. She consented to give her full cooperation and willingness
to participate in the interview as well as in the physical assessment. I then decided that the case
study would revolve around her condition, which would fulfill my individualized requirement for
this course which is the case study utilizing both the community and hospital formats. Time
passed, we were called for our lunch break and in this given time, the group as well as the other
group from our section then decided to merge into one for the health education and program that
will be conducted in the following week. Both groups then came into an agreement that the
health education would focus on Diabetes. Frittering the time away the group decided to head
back to school for post-conference, and the whole community group had an initial planning for
the health program. The day then adjourned.

Reflection:

As I was conducting the interview I was trying to put myself in the shoe of my client. I am happy
that I get to do what I’m tasked to but at the same time, a patchwork of emotions evoked in me as
I got to know how a person who has an existing condition struggles especially when they are
someone special to me. It motivates me to be in this duty where I can do something for them. It
amplifies the passion that I have in giving healthcare service. It challenges me in a way as it
measures my tolerance in this matter because personally, I am a very emotional person and my
emotions tend to get the better of me for most of the time. Thanks to this activity I get to explore
more about how it is to be a client while I get to explore more how it feels to do something for
them.

Faith in Action:

Romans 12:15

Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep

They say that we must comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. As I progress in this
field, I become more empathic and there is a patchwork of feelings that is evoking in me. There
is a feeling of warmth how I put a vast amount of effort into work just to have a grasp of what it
feels to touch lives. The feeling of fulfilment to be able to deliver an actual interview as if it is
more of a duty than a requirement. I cannot help but to picture the faces of our courageous front-
liners who were risking their necks in combatting a biological claw of life which is the COVID-
19 pandemic in 2020 even up to this day. No amount of fees will ever compensate their service
and dedication in this war. I cannot fathom how difficult it is to ensure the safety of others and to
set aside your own, just like how I journeyed through this duty as the intolerable heat of the sun
really made it like squeezing water from a stone.

For my action, I want to emulate the courage and urge of our front-liners to save lives. I want to
be like them who can provide, who can help and who can be relied on in times of health crisis.
By “want” means to work and I want to work double for it. From now on, I will be more
dedicated, determined, and driven to obtain an RN degree as it will really fit right after your
name when you know you worked your fingers to the bones for it
