The Training Experience

Part 1. Personal Expectations

In this Work Immersion, I expect that I would be doing and I would witness some
procedures that happens in a hospital such as some laboratory works. I would like to see
how they (real doctors and nurses) handle patients in the hospitals. I see myself
witnessing or even doing some laboratory works like blood extraction and different more
that would make me ready to face some works I would do in my chosen field. I am
foreseeing this immersion as an activuty that would really help me decide and
contemplate what I really want for my future, on what field should I be and what course
should I choose.

I expect that there are a lot of pressure would be in our hands when we start or work in
a hospital. I've been searching and watching videos of different works that we might do
when we are going to work in a hospital. There are lots of things we need to easily take in
order to cope up with the work inside the hospital.

For the people that we will encounter while working inside the hospital, for the
patients, I expect that not all will be considerate and not all will understand some
mistakes we, OJT's might done. For the department head that we might work with, I
expect that they will give us works and tasks that might challenge our multi-tasking skills
and our ability to manage our time. Despite of all the pressures, I expect that I would be
working with people who have positive mind that would make our environment happy
and will make our day less stressful.
Part 2. Day to Day Narrative

November 11, 2019 Monday

On our first day, I and some of my classmates/schoolmates who were also assigned in Cruz-
Rabe Maternity and General Hospital arrived early in the hospital. We are in our corporate attire
that time because our teacher told us to wear a corporate attire since we need to look decently
and appropriately in front of our department head. When we are in the hospital, we immediately
proceed to the information desk, and then there we've talked with the department head of
information, Ma'am Katrina Cipriano. We gave her our resume and she told us to have a time
log, since that is our first day, we don't have our own DTR (daily time record) so we just wrote
our names on a bond paper and put the time we arrived in the hospital and then we signed. After
that we gave it to Ma'am Kat and then she already told us our first task, but before that, we saw
another assistant in the Information Department which is Ma'am Neri, who already gave us a
warm smile that made us kind of relieve. We greeted each other and our department head told us
to introduce ourselves. After we introduce ourselves, they also introduced themselves. Our first
task was to sort the records of the patients of September 2019 and October 2019. We sorted it
alphabetically and we bundled it according to the first letter of their surnames and then we put it
inside a plastic envelope. After that we arranged those envelopes alphabetically and then we put
it inside the cabinet under the desk wherein we had a hard time because we're wearing a
coporate attire and heels that us move difficultly. On our first day, we also experienced the
hardships on looking and finding the records of our patients, because we arrived there where
some of the records are not in their original places and they were not arranged properly. Our first
day revolves in looking and finding the record of our patients.

November 12, 2019 Tuesday

Ma'am Katrina noticed that our attires on our first day were really thick and made it hard for
us to move easily so before we leave the hospital on our first day, she told us to just wear a
comfortable thin outfit since it was hot in our department cause we are only using two
electricfans. So on our Day 2, I just wore a white blouse and a squarepants. On our second day,
we still did the things we did on our first day and Ma'am Katrina just added some tasks we need
to do for that day. Since we had a hard time on finding patients' records because the records are
not properly arranged, we are tasked to arranged the records of the patients, first with the health
card. There are a lot of patients with helathcard especially with the healthcard maxicare. It was
great to arranged those records because we are now enlightened that there are a lot of HMO
companies/card that help patients on consultation payments, laboratory payments and such. The
records of patients with a Maxicare healthcard was really hard to arrange because there are a lot
of patients who used a maxicare healthcard. Just like what we did on the records of September
and October patients, we firat arranged the records alpahbetically and then we bundled it
according to the first letter of their surname and then we put it inside the plastic envelopes. There
are also other healthcards used by the patients such as intellicare, cocolife, asiancare, asian life
etc.. After arranging the records, we continue our work by assisting the patients who come in our
desk. When they have no records, we have to ask them if they will use a healthcard, if the patient
say No, then we will give them an OPD form (Outpatient Department) where in they need to fill
up the inportant parts we put checks such as Name, Age, Address, Sex, Status. If they have
healthcard, they need to fill up the part of the form that says HMO or the healthcard they will use
and the healthcard number, and they also need to fill up another form, the HMO
consultation/laboratory forms depending on the healtchard. Then after filling up all the forms,
we'll put date and time and we will give it yo the doctore inside the Emergency Room,
sometimes when a patient is a child, we will put the form in the OPD, when the patient is
pregnant we'll put their OPD form in the Ultrasound department where an OB doctor is waiting.
Our second day revolved on that.

November 13, 2019 Wednesday

On our third day, ofcourse we wondered if we will go in other departments such as
laboratory, urinalysis or drug test, because that's what we reaaly want to do and also because we
are craving on doing or experiencing or witnessing a medical prcedure such as blood extraction.
We asked our department heads l, Maam Kat and Maam Jill if we can go on other departments
and then Ma'am Kat asked someone in ither departments and when she came back se said only
one can go in the laboratory but two of my workmates went there and the very best happened
was, they just came back in the information department because one of the nurse in the lab told
them they are not allowing OJT's in their department. We were really disappointed that time
because we realized it is really exhausting doing the same thing again and again. We thought this
immersion will really help us on gaining knowledge about hospital procedures since we are
having course in the medical field. So that day, we just did what we did on our first and second
day. We assist the patients, fill up forms for patients, sort patients records, and never ending
looking for patient record.
November 14, 2019 Thursday
Fourth day, the day where we accepted the fact that we won't be able to roam on other
departments, that we will be in the information department for the whole immersion,
disappointed but we just enjoyed each day. On our fourth day, I tried to do different tasks such as
encoding patients' record and putting patient number in their OPD form, I also tried to page
nurses and I really loved it. I love hearing my voice inside the whole hospital saying "Paging
facilitator in duty please proceed to ER/OR/ Ward", in all honesty, this is the thing I really
enjoyed in my immersion. Then, next thing I tried was to call HMO companies for the approval
of consultation and laboratory of the patients. It was really great when you are talking to other
people who is very professional, that time I felt like I was a call center agent saying "Good
morning this is Fae from Cruz-Rabe Maternity and General Hospital, Approval for Consultation
po" it was really great! The way the people on another line talked to me was really heart
warming, they were all great and kind. Then the day went by just like the other days in the
hospital.
November 15, 2019 Friday
There's nothing new on the things we did on our fifth day in Cruz-Rabe. Since we are in the
same department for the whole time, what we did on our first four days was literally what we
also did on our 5th day. I assisted patients, I called HMO companies, I paged some facilitators, I
looked for patients' records. What I have that time were realizations such as , we completed our
first week in the hospital, that it is really exhausting doing the same tasks everyday and the best
realization that time was, it is really important to remember when was your last check-up!! Based
on our experiences on our first week, it was really hard to look a patient record especially if they
can't remember their last check up. Eventhough we have a computer to find and look on the date
of their check up, some were uselsss because some of the records in the computer were not
updated. Fifty day was just like an ordinary day in Cruz-Rabe.
November 18, 2019 Monday
Monday, our 6th day in Cruz-Rabe, I experienced a heavy traffic in our are so arrived late that
day. On our sixth day, we have the same routine in our first week in our immersion. We assisted
patients by giving them form to fill up. We called HMO companies to verify and to ask approval
of consultations of the patient, we look for patients' record and we encoded some records of the
patients in the computer. Most of the time, around 3-4 pm, we don't have a lot of patients so
when we just sort the record of the patients, we arranged it properly so that it would be easy for
us to find and look for the patients' records. We just don't arrange it alphabetically but also,
according to the patient number. The records of the patient from year 2017-2018 was arranged
originally by their patient number. When there is a patient whose record was from 2016, we're
just giving them a new OPD form because our heads , Ma'am Kat and Ma'am Jill tozld us that
they already disposed those records. They said that they are disposing records every 3 yrs. Since
I and some of my workmates arrived late, we decided to have a 30 minute overtime that day so
we can complete the 8 hours of work.
November 19, 2019 Tuesday
I know that it's already unpleasant to read that we are just doing the same thing everyday,
again and again and again but believe it or not, it's unpleasant for me too to write the same thing
again and again but yes life must go on. On our 7th day, since we have a lot of forms that needed
to be filled up by the patients, some of it were running out. As you can see in the picture, that
time I was cutting SOA form or the statement of account form because we don't have any stock
of it. SOA is a form that is filled up by the patients when they use healthcards, except for
Maxicare because Maxicare has a website for patients' consultation and laboratory approval.
That day, I also made an admission chart. These chart was composed of 12 papers/forms such as
medical records, nurse records, etc. This form was bundled by a paper clip and I made 30 pieces
of it. Making these charts is easy but it was tiring because it can make your hand numb. At the
end of the day, we just did the same routine.
November 20, 2019 Wednesday
It was just a typical day for us, same routine, we did the same thing. We assisted patients, we
filled up forms, we encoded records, we sort the records, we answer calls, we paged facilitators
and many more. Due to our boredom because we're just doing the same thing again and again,
everytime we're looking for a patient's records, if we've already found it, we have to shout
"darna", I enjoyed that but one time I shouted very loud and it was heard inside the ER, I know
that was wrong and I said sorry to one of our department head , Ma'am Jill since Ma'am Kat is
not there because it was her day off. So, same things went by again and again, and that day we
have witnessed a patient that was already dead on arrival. We heard how his family cried and
those mournings were heard in the lobby of the hospital.
November 21, 2019 Thursday
It was the last day that we saw our departmemt head, Ma'am Kat because she said that she
will be absent on Friday because of personal matters. So, we decided to have a pizza on that day.
We already planned it on Friday but since Ma'am Kat was absent, we just did the celebration of
our Immersion on Thursday. We ate a domino pizza and had some softdrinks. We enjoyed that
day because we were really full. But, ofcourse we did our jobs, same things go on
again and again. Forms, phone calls, computers, records patients. One thing I realized that time
was, there are some patients who thinks they are boss. We've encountered a patient who looked
us down because we don't know everything about the informations of the doctors since we are
not oriented about that. We explained our side that we are just OJT's but she didn't care at all so
we just let her said what he wanted. Day 9 was exhausting but it was a great experience that we
can learn a lot of lessons, not all people are kind hearted and understanding.
November 22, 2019 Friday
Last Day, we were very happy because finally, the same things we do everyday, again and
again will have come to an end. We happily assisted the patients, we filled up forms for them.
We called different HMO companies and we encoded patients' records. In our last day, I realized
that, somehow it was really great to work in the Information Desk. Eventhough we didn't have
the chance to work in the real medical field, even if we didn't experience extracting blood or
some laboratory works, it was still great to work in an Information Department. We knew and
discovered things we think we won't know. The different procedures that we haven't witnessed
were still known by us because these informations were included when we call HMO companies
for laboratory and consultation approval. Different procedures like urinalysis, dengue NS1 and
many more.

Part 3 Insights: Gained and Work Application

Work Immersion in Cruz-Rabe Maternity and General Hospital helped and

enlightened me on the course and field that I have chosen. Being in a medical field is
really a hard decision you need to think of. There are lots of things you need to consider
when entering a medical field and that is what working in Cruz-Rabe Hospital have
taught me.

This Work Immersion have taught me different things I need to know when working in
a hospital. Since we didn't have the chance to work in the real medical world wherein we
can witness doctors and nurses treating patients, there are still lot of lessons that I have
learned in working in the Information Desk of a hospital. Information Desk Department
of the hospital is somehow one of the most important department in a hospital. When we
are in Cruz-Rabe Hospital, I learned different forms that patients need to fill up in order
to have a consultation or laboratory works in the hospital. Forms such as OPD forms or
the Outpatient Department forms wherein patients write their informations needed in the
consultations, there's this form also called SOA or the Statement of Agreement form that
is needed when the patients have healthcard that they will use to help them in the
payments of consultation. When it comes to the records of the patients, I learned that it is
really a must for the patients to remember their last checkup in order for us to easily find
their last records. The records must be really properly arranged according to patient
number, healthcard, and their surnames.

Working in the information desk made me realize that socializing and dealing with
people is somehow hard if you can't handle people's attitudes. I realized that, not all
people are kind, not all are easy to deal with. Some might look you down, some might
degrade your personality, but when you're working in that position, you can’t do anything
but to deal with them. Be humble and have all the courage to understand them in order to
have peace with each other. Working, jot just in a hospital but in many different fields is
not easy. Doing everything you do again and again, everyday, for the whole year or even
more, is not that easy. I realized that what other people do is not easy, it was all
exhausting, but the best thing that I really learned when I worked in the hospital was ,
learn to enjoy and love what you are doing. No matter how hard, no matter how
exhausting, staying positive and happy won't lose you something, just enjoy and then you
will be shocked that you've passed another exhausting day again.
