Act. 2

photography-contest-with-plagiarized-photo/story/
In what competition did Solis send in his plagiarized work?

The photo entry of Solis, entitled The Mettle of the Filipino Spirit, was sent to the Chilean
Embassy’s photo contest and was supposed to be awarded the first prize, but was found
out to be plagiarized. The original owner of the photo was Gregory John Smith, who claimed
(and was verified) that the photo was taken in 2006 in Brazil.

•        What sanctions did he receive from the organizing committee? Describe his actions.

Due to his actions, he was stripped off the photo contest’s first prize. He also sent a letter to
the organizers which makes him resign from participating the competition. His actions were
selfish and unethical, and his colleague see this act as hurting to the people who believed in
him. It also reflects the reality of the digital world even us can relate. Plagiarism is rampant
to the modern days, that even a student can be capable of doing it and technology can help
remove traces of the crime that even the contest organizers in Chile have not been able to
detect plagiarism until someone claimed the photo.

•        Do you think technology and the Internet have made plagiarism easier?

As our technology further improves, more information are made available to the general
public. Technology also enables artificially intelligent software to paraphrase and change the
form of the sentence structure. This helps a layman to use this information for his/her own sake.
Therefore, technology and the Internet can be identified as factors that make plagiarism easier.

 Do you think technology has made people more or less creative? Explain your
answer by citing examples.

Although improving technology is also associated with higher risks of plagiarism,

people remain more creative over time. Technology has introduced more forms of
art, such as virtual realities (VR mode), vector art, and projection mapping. It has
made more imaginative genre of movies possible, like the Avengers series. It
allowed innovation of more sophisticated supercars, like the Bugatti and Koenigsegg,
and also allowed new forms of transportation like the Magnet-Levitated Supertrains
(MagLev) in China. It also makes travel to space more lucrative like Elon Musk’s plan
to build a colony on Mars, whom also begins a project to make internet connectivity
available via satellite connections (Starlink).

redemption

 According to the article, how did Solis redeem himself? What job did he have?
Solis was able to redeem himself by showing commitment in managing the
football program at a makeshift field, which can be found at Baclaran Church.
He is working among street children aspiring to become football professionals
for two years, aiming to “develop their character through the sport”.
 What project did he help?
Solis is the anchor to the “Calidad Humana: Sharing the Filipino Spirit” project
along with Roberto Mayorga, a former Chilean Ambassador to the
Philippines. In the said project, a football club of children aged 8-12 was
realized in an effort to provide opportunities for their personal and spiritual
development.
 What is there to learn about the life of Solis?
In the words of Bruce Lee, “mistakes are always forgivable if one has the
courage to admit them”. Even though Solis’ act was shameful, he had the
courage to admit the mistake and apologized to the public. He rebuilt his life
from a massive downfall and not let the mistake haunt his life and his
character. To end, we use another quote from Bram Stoker, “We learn from
failure, and not from success”.

Act. 3
1. What are the differences between talking to your friends or family over the
Internet and talking to them in person?

The difference between talking to them on the internet and talking to them in
person is that on the internet the receiver did not know the expression or she
or him most likely misunderstood the meaning of the chat or comment while
talking to them in person is they can fully understand the message that you
are trying to tell.
First, talking through the Internet and other media, even at the availability of
voice and video chat, will hinder the receiver’s ability to comprehend the
speaker’s expression, which can be identified through tone, body language,
and gestures. These can be easily confirmed in talking with people in person,
thus online communication may cause misunderstanding. Second, the
connection between the speaker and the receiver can be more felt in face-to-
face communication because you can feel the physical presence of the person
while in online you can only see his/her face (or words via texting or chatting)
through the screen.
2. What could Erika have done to avoid this situation?
Erika should have messaged Alan privately on what the post was about, so she
won’t leave confusing comments which may be viewed by Alan as offensive. She
should also message him what her comment was about to avoid
misunderstanding. Also, another option is that she should have not
commented at all and focus on other important things if she did not want Alan
to be misunderstood, confused, or be ashamed.

3. What could Alan have done to avoid this situation?

Alan’s reply to Erika’s comment did not help resolve the situation. He should have remained calm, and
ask/confront her about the situation through a private message. Surely she doesn’t want Alan to be
harmed. If he found out that she intends a negative comment, he should be the better person and
delete the comment, or block/ignore her.

Alan should calm himself first before doing something harsh and confront Erika about the situation.

4. What am I saying about myself with these words?

Act. 4
1. Based on your result, how would you assess yourself in terms of Internet usage
and Internet addiction?

The survey of Mind Diagnostics has given me a rating of 62/100 for the Internet
Addiction Screening Test, which means I am at high risk to develop internet addiction
disorder. I agree to the results because on my daily life, I spend at least 5 hours on internet
usage, may it be for browsing, socializing, and playing. I also see myself as prone to
internet addiction because even my parents scold me sometimes that my phone only takes
a rest when it needs to be recharged.

2.     How would you improve your digital and online habits?

To help remediate my risk to online addiction, I resort myself to online therapies and
watching YouTube videos demonstrating how to minimize the use of gadgets. I am following
a self-made schedule on the time I can use my gadgets and the time I should be physically
active or take a rest. I am also inspired by my friend that is at low risk to internet addiction
because she is doing a lot of household chores, playing sports instead of online games,
answering on paper instead of editing documents to minimize internet exposure, and
exercise with a proper amount of sleep. She turned out gorgeous and healthy, so I am
looking forward to do the same.

3.     What ways can you suggest to your peers to avoid developing Internet or computer
addiction?

Even at the digital world the well-known saying “Prevention is better than cure”. So, I
will suggest to my peers to, if possible, avoid temptations that may drag them to addiction.
Apps lile TikTok, Mobile Legends, Netflix are undeniably entertaining and may consume
hours of our daily life with us being unaware of it. However, if we cannot avoid using these
apps, we should minimize exposure to it, and we should spend more time on other activities
like jogging with friends, doing household chores, reading books, and other equally
entertaining things to do.
Act. 5
Name two of the possible health related effects that cyberbullying can have on a victim and
explain each
1. The most prevalent effect of cyberbullying is its dilemma to the mental and emotional health
of the victims. A systematic review of Kwan et. al (2020) has revealed that cyberbullying is
strongly associated with depression, suicidality, anxiety, and aggressive behavior. Depression,
anxiety and suicidality is more prevalent in women because they are perceived by bullies with
lower self-esteem, and are prone to develop mental and psychological disorders. Aggressive
behavior, on the other hand, can be seen more in males as they tend to either act out by hitting
back and sparking “flame wars” or using violence towards the cyberbully (Frisen, 2014). In
addition, the stress and trauma victims experience from bullying are also pointed as the root
causes.
2. Aside from the mental stigma cyberbullying gives to its victims, there are also identified
physical effects due to stress. Gordon (2021) of VeryWell Family asserts that cyberbullying
causes stress-related conditions in the gastrointestinal area, such as ulcer, abdominal pain, and
at times may feel nausea. Moreover, they may also develop eating disorders, most commonly
anorexia and binge-eating disorders, and also disrupt the circadian rhythm or their body clock
by having irregular sleeping patterns. As victims feel their lives being dismantled, they resort
their authority over personal behaviors like eating and sleeping patterns, but usually it does not
turn out beneficial to the ones that habitualize these disorders.

Act. 6
1. What issues do you see in the poster?
From the cartoon, we can infer that the prevailing issue is about intellectual property
theft. The three scientists have identical objects invented to present to the public. The
intellectual property was the object, which was a product of one’s creativity and ingenuity. It
can also be seen in the picture that the scientists in the middle and right are shocked and
confused, and may also experience lack of trust and confidence towards the scientist on the
left.
2. What possible dangers and issues are in the picture?

In doing intellectual property theft, individuals and companies may suffer from economic
damage, slow growth of business, and disruption of healthy competition (Sotkinov, 2019) Looking at the
big picture, almost 225 billion US dollars are lost annually because of counterfeiting /pirating intangible
goods, infringement of patents, and pirating software, according to the Update to the IP Commission
Report in 2017. In addition, just like theft of our jewelry and other valuable goods, we may also
experience stress and trauma if some intellectual property like ideas for projects, research papers, and
contest output styles are stolen from us.
3. Which of these issues have happened to you or your friends? Why did they happen?

Infringement of intellectual property happened to me and against me many times. Some time
ago I had lend my project to my friend because he has no idea how to do it. However, after I saw his
output I am shocked because it is almost identical to mine. I have also committed unintentional IP
stealing before when I asked another friend to lend me their brochure (it was my first time making a
brochure). Although we did not have the same place, the layout and structure of the brochure was
almost identical to hers. I apologized and never asked her to lend me projects again. I have also pirated
some applications and movies.
