Quarter 2 – Module 2:

Evolution of Media

Name of Learner: ___________________________

Grade & Section: ___________________________
Name of School: ___________________________
What I Need to Know
This module is designed to inform you on the important roles that media play in society,
education, religion, health, politics, and in fact everything. With the popularity of media
platforms today like televisions, radios, social applications, streaming apps, and many
more, there is no doubt that media have changed the ways we get access to relevant
information. Moreover, this module explains how traditional media evolved to the new
media. This module considers the crucial roles that media, information and technology
bring to the 21st-century education.
In this module, you will reflect on how 20th century had changed the way we look
at our history. This century became the witness of the introduction of the most popular
device in human history: the television. TV is a technology used for communication that
revolutionized the delivery of information, entertainment, and artistic expression to the
audience: the masses.
Furthermore, this module provides interesting contents of the 21st century and
how it shapes this vast world through media. The birth of the Internet, a technology
whose potential makes TV pale into insignificance in comparison, has made everything
turn into a fast-paced world. It is therefore interesting to take a journey back
through the ages, and to discover the role of media and communication throughout
history.

The module contains lessons that will enable you to identify the similarities and
differences between and among media literacy, information literacy, and technology
literacy.
After going through this module, you are expected to:
• Define media literacy;
• Differentiate the uses of the three literacies: media, information, and technology;
• Reflect on the important roles that the three 21st-century literacies play into our lives;
and
Apply media, information, and technology literacies in various settings/contexts

What is it

The Evolution of Traditional to New Media

In this modern age or information and communications technology, it is evident that

being media and information literate is considered as a fundamental skill for any person to be
competent in society. What criteria does it take to be considered a media and information
literate person?

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in

2005 defined literacy as one’s cognitive ability to process information using written materials
in various context. As human civilization progresses, reading and numeracy have become
foundational skills resulting in other types of literacies such as environmental, financial,
technology, news, cinema, advertising, library and the like. In the context that humans learn in
different ways, it is evident that each person acquires certain types and level of literacies
through formal education and experience. More than decoding texts and numbers, becoming
literate gives leverage for the people to participate in today’s society.

In this unit, the focal point is understanding the power and influence of media and
information in personal, educational, professional, and societal context leading towards media
and information literacy. Notice this type of literacy is a combination of two distinctive
terminologies, media and information.

What’s More
You have learned that information literacy is a combination of research skills, critical
thinking skills, computer technology skills, and communication skills. Information literacy is
essential for academic success, effective functioning in the workplace, and participation in
society as knowledgeable citizens. The presentation below shows the important literacy
information skills that you need in obtaining and utilizing an information.
Information It is the freedom or ability to identify, obtain and make use
access of database or information effectively.

It brings together (separate parts) into a single or unified whole;

Information
unite; combine, to discard the unused or unwanted items of and
consolidation
organize the remaining to make solid or firm.

It is the processing of data and information within the IT network,

Information
systems and applications.
Utilization

Information It encourages you to think critically about the reliability, validity,

Evaluation accuracy, authority, timeliness, point of view or bias of information
sources.
In the above context, it requires you to apply your information literacy by identifying
databases, using various search strategies, and posing worthwhile questions about the topic.

Elements of Information Literacy

1. Identifying/recognizing information needs
2. Determining sources of information
3. Citing or searching for information
4. Analyzing and evaluating the quality of information
5. Organizing, storing or archiving information
6. Using information in an ethical, efficient and effective way
7. Creating and communicating new knowledge

Activity 3. Low-tech Future

We are now living in 21st century where people are dependent on technology. Imagine
waking up one day and you find out that internet, libraries and cellphones, newspaper,
magazines, radio stations, and TV channels have disappeared.

these tools an individual can access, manage, integrate, evaluate, create and
communicate information.
A Digital literate individual:
a. is able to engage with multi-media to read and interpret text, sounds and images.
b. can manipulate and evaluate data to construct their own meaning.
c. also includes a student having knowledge about how to use technology to construct
meaning, but most importantly in ways that are appropriate to their needs.

Examples of Digital Literacy

1. Understanding how to use web browsers, search engines, email, text, wiki, blogs,
Photoshop, PowerPoint, video creation/editing software, etc. to showcase learning.

Digital literacy is one component of being a digital citizen - a person who is responsible
for how they utilize technology to interact with the world around them.
Digital technology allows people to interact and communicate with family and friends on

Not only do white-collar jobs require digital literacy in the use of media to present, record
and analyze data, but so do blue-collar jobs who are looking for way to increase productivity
and analyze market trends, along with increase job safety.
➢ Why do you need information?
- to be updated with the news, for learning/education purposes, for
communication, to acquire knowledge needed for decision-making.

➢ How do you acquire and store information?
➢ write, print, photocopy, photograph, download, cloud storage, record, external
memory drives, memory cards
➢ How will you determine the quality and accuracy of the information that you
have?
- It should come from a reputable source, such as an institution

- share, apply, announce, post, archive, reminder, answer a query, clarify
confusion
➢ How will you communicate information?
- announcement, text, post to social media, face to face session, note, chat,
