Generic Name of Drug: Dexamethasone

Brand Name:

Drug Classification: Corticosteroids

Drug Action/s: Dexamethasone's effect on the body occurs in a variety of ways. It works by
suppressing the migration of neutrophils and decreasing lymphocyte colony proliferation. The
capillary membrane becomes less permeable, as well. Lysosomal membranes have increased
stability.

Dose, frequency and route of administration (doctor’s order): 6 mg / IM q12 for 4 doses

Indication/s for administering the medication to the patient: Preterm pregnancy to


accelerate surfactant production

Contraindications:
 Active, untreated tuberculosis
 Inactive tuberculosis
 Herpes simplex infection of the eye
 A herpes simplex infection
 An infection due to a fungus
 Intestinal infection caused by the roundworm strongyloides
 A condition with low thyroid hormone levels
 Diabetes

 Observe for signs of adverse reactions
 Monitor blood pressure 2-3 times daily
 Test for glycosuria daily. If urine is positive for sugar, check each urine.
 Observe gastric aspirates and stools fir bleeding
 Observe closely for signs of infection

 Do not stop taking the oral drug without consulting your health care provider
 Avoid exposure to infection
 Report unusual weight gain, swelling of the extremities, muscle weakness, black or tarry
stools, fever, prolonged sore throat, colds or other infections, worsening of this disorder.

 Report any irritation
