SCOPE

BEFORE INSTALLING THE APPLIANCE, READ


THIS MANUAL CAREFULLY
• Cassette fan coils are intended for use in commer-
cial and residential environments fitted with false
ceilings.
• Cassette fan coils are built exclusively for heating,
filtration and cooling; they are not suitable for any
other use.

The Cassette fan coils cannot be used:


• for outdoor air-conditioning
• for installation in humid environments
• for installation in explosive atmospheres
• for installation in corrosive atmospheres

Check that the room where the appliance is


installed does not contain substances that gener-
ate corrosion on the aluminium fins.

depending on whether the room is to be heated or
cooled.

FAN ASSEMBLY (i-CXW models)


The motor-fan assembly, suspended on vibration
dampers, features particularly silent operation.
Radial fan with single-side intake, designed to opti-
mise performance using specially-shaped airfoil
blades that reduce turbulence, increasing efficiency
and minimising noise.
The fans are coupled to brushless, permanent magnet
synchronous EC motors, with three-phase power sup-
ply, controlled by a reconstructed current signal with a
sinusoidal waveform (BLAC). The inverter board that
controls operation of the motors is powered at 230
volts, single-phase, and uses a switching system to
generate a three-phase power supply with modulated
frequency and waveform. The unit thus requires a sin-
gle-phase power supply, with voltage of 230 V / 50 Hz.

HEAT EXCHANGER COIL (a-CXW models)


Made up of copper pipes and suitably-shaped alumini-
um fins, joined to the pipes by mechanical flaring.
The heat exchanger is not suitable for use in corrosive
atmospheres or in environments where aluminium
may be subject to corrosion.

HEAT EXCHANGER COIL (i-CXW models)


Made up of copper pipes and suitably-shaped alu-
minium fins, joined to the pipes by mechanical flaring.
Available with 2 or 3 rows in the version for two-pipe
systems, and 2+1 rows for four-pipe systems (the hot
row is the one on the inside).

BUILT-IN POWER BOARD (HB/i-HB)


All units can be fitted as standard with HB (a-CXW)
and iHB (i-CXW) power boards. The HB/i-HB power
board manages the fan speed and operation of the
on-off valves; communication between the user inter-
face (EKW and iKW controllers). For units equipped
with the HB/i-HB board, local Master-Slave network
installations are possible, with a two-wire connection
(the board comes with dipswitches for setting the
address in multiple installations and for system config-
uration), as well as installation in centralised hydronic
management systems compatible with the Modbus
protocol (in combination with the RS485 expansion
card accessory).

ACCESSORIES

PRIMARY AIR CONNECTION


The a-CXW and i-CXW cassette fan coils can mix primary air (coming from an air handling system) with recirculat-
ed air. The maximum amount of air is equal to 20% of fan coil flow-rate at medium speed.

rooms, using the special fitting accessory. Total air flow-rate does not change.

AIR FLOW-RATE MANAGEMENT

The air throw specified in the tables must be considered a maximum value only, as it may vary significantly depend-
ing on the size of the room where the appliance is installed, and the arrangement of the furniture in the room. Use-
ful air throw L refers to the distance between the appliance and the point where the air speed is 0.2 m/sec; if the
louvre is at a 30° angle (recommended in cooling mode), the so-called “Coanda” effect occurs, as illustrated in the
first diagram, while at a 45° angle (recommended in heating mode), air flow is downwards, as illustrated in the sec-
ond diagram.

GENERAL WARNINGS

For installation:

• Be sure to connect the earth.
• Do not install in an explosive or corrosive atmos-
phere, in damp places, outdoors or in very dusty
environments.
• The space above the false ceiling must be dry and
adequately protected against the ingress of mois-
ture.
• In the event of installation with an outside air intake
damper, be aware of winter frost that can may break
the coil tubes.

During installation, for safety reasons, always observe


the following requirements:
• The unit must always be handled by two people.
• Handle the fan coils by holding them only at the
appropriate points.
• Hoists and lifting equipment must have a sufficient
capacity.
• Do not use faulty hoists and lifting equipment.
• Ropes, straps and similar lifting devices must not be
knotted or come into contact with sharp edges.
• Forklifts, hoists and cranes must have a sufficient
capacity.
• No loads should be suspended above people.

The following are also recommended:


• The operating pressure and temperature should
never exceed the specified pressure and tempera-
ture (see the label).
• The air intake and supply openings should never be
obstructed or blocked!

For maintenance and repairs:


• When replacing components, always request origi-
nal spare parts.
• Always use work gloves.
• Do not carry out any work or maintenance without
having first disconnected the appliance from the
power supply.
• Do not remove any protective devices without hav-
ing first disconnected the appliance from the power
supply.

INSTALLATION

Installation, commissioning and maintenance of the


fan coil must always be performed in compliance with
all the health and safety rules, regulations, codes and
standards and the latest technology.

Preparation for installation


• Operation of the equipment requires a water con-
nection to the boiler/chiller and power connection.
• The false ceiling must be in position and an opening
must have been made to house the fan coil. The
minimum and maximum dimensions for this opening
are:

• The pipes must already be installed and the valves


must be ready for installation.
• In cooling mode, the unit may produce condensate.
A condensate collection and disposal system must
be provided.
• The cables to be connected to the appliance must
already be installed above the false ceiling.

recessed installation in false ceilings.
• Provide grills on the doors for air circulation.

INSTALLATION

Environmental conditions
• The air temperature in the fan coil intake area (in
the middle of the grill intake area) must be between
6 and 40°C. The temperature must never exceed
these limits.
• Relative humidity must be between 15 and 75%.

This air is mixed with the air taken in from the room
inside the appliance.

The air-conditioning intake pressure is slightly


lower than atmospheric pressure.

This low pressure should not be considered in the


design of the air-conditioning system.

Fixing the fan coil


The fan coil is fixed to the structural ceiling using
threaded bars (not supplied).
The drawings show the configuration needed to fix the
fan coil in place (seen from floor to ceiling).

Procedure
The procedure for installing the fan coil is as follows:

in the false ceiling and then drill the holes for the
threaded bars (the dimensions are shown in the

• Fix the threaded bars to the ceiling.
The length of the bars depends on the space
between the false ceiling and the structural ceiling.

• The fan coil is then tilted and pushed through the


opening, with the terminal block facing upwards, and
placed in a horizontal position above the opening.
• The hooks on the brackets are used for quick tem-
porary installation.
• The appliance is then fixed to the threaded bars.
• The appliance must be perfectly horizontal.
• The appliance can be installed using other methods
deemed as being suitable by the installer, as long as
this complies with the regulations in force.

Correct installation is essential, and also includes


insulation of the air ducts with insulating material to
prevent condensation at the fluid pipe connections.

Heat transfer fluid


• The heat transfer fluid is either water or a water and
glycol solution.
• The fluid temperature must be between 5 and 80°C
and must never exceed these limits.
• Maximum operating pressure: 1000 kPa (10 bars).
• Use always two spanners when tightening the coil to
the piping.
• Always fit a water flow on-off valve.

WARNING!
• In summer and during extended periods with the
fan off, to avoid condensation on the outside of the
appliance, the coil fluid supply must be shut off.
• If the appliance is equipped with a valve, connect
the connection pipes to this valve.
• If the appliance is used for cooling, to prevent drip-
ping from condensation, insulate the pipes and the
valve.

Condensate drain hose


THE CONDENSATE DRAIN SHOULD BE FITTED
WITH A DRAIN TRAP. INSTALL THE CONDENSATE
DRAIN HOSE WITH A SLOPE OF AT LEAST 2 cm/
metre.

The condensate drain hose, which comes out near the


water connections, has the following characteristics:
- length = 470 mm
- outside diameter of the fitting = 14 mm

The maximum pump head is 65 0mm from the bottom


edge of the appliance.

Drain pan
The condensate drain pan collects condensate from
the heat exchanger connections and control valves.

Expansion kit for HB / i-HB power board


The following expansion modules can be fitted on the HB / i-HB power board using the slots available on the board.
The board features 2 different slots for different types of connection:
- Slot 1 for connecting expansion kits for modulating 0-10 V valves or modulating 3-position valves
- Slot 2 for connecting RS485 expansion kits – interface for centralised management systems

RS485 kit - interface for centralised management sys-


tems
The fan coils can be integrated into centralised hydronic and
RS485 supervision systems compatible with the Modbus
RTU protocol. The interface kit is installed on the power
board fitted as standard on the fan coil and powered by
the same board. The fan coil control unit is not required for
management in centralised systems. The RS485 kit features
plug&play installation, consequently no parameters need to
be set.
0-10 Vdc valve expansion kit
The fan coils can be combined with modulating 0-10 Vdc
valve assemblies.
For operation, the 0-10 Vdc valve expansion kit must be
installed on the power board.
The valve management kit should be requested when order-
ing the unit.
The 0-10 Vdc valve expansion kit features plug&play instal-
lation, consequently no parameters need to be set.

3-position valve expansion kit


The fan coils can be combined with modulating 3-position
valve assemblies. For operation, the 3-position valve expan-
sion kit must be installed on the power board, fitted as stand-
ard on the fan coil. The valve management kit should be
requested when ordering the unit.
The 3-position valve expansion kit features plug&play instal-
lation, consequently no parameters need to be set.

two sliders.
