Heart's Greenest Pastures

by Loveotomy

Summary

Rather than anger, Peko knew his look of nerves when she saw it. “When we first arrived
here, the first time we were alone together you took me aside and told me that you had
something to say to me when we got outta here.”

Peko’s heart leapt like the smallest of the ranch’s chickens, currently popping around after a
bug. She felt her face warm. “Oh… That. Yes, I recall.”

It might have been that Peko was too predictable for her own good, or likely even Fuyuhiko’s, to
take it a step further. Predictability was certainly a less than desirable trait for a bodyguard, a fact
that Peko had drummed into her since birth. If a member of a rival clan ever got the better of her,
that would spell near certain death for the boy she has sworn to protect.

But that was neither here nor there, Peko thought as she allowed herself a faint smile at Fuyuhiko’s
approach. There were no yakuza members on the island, save for themselves.

On Jabberwock Island, everyone was on their own. No clan members to have each other’s backs,
just sixteen students, all with not a soul to count on. For better or worse, that was the nature of the
situation Peko and Fuyuhiko found themselves in, and it was Peko’s duty to do what was best for
her master.

Fuyuhiko’s eyes traveled to the cow standing directly behind Peko, before looking back to her with
a smirk. “Thought I’d find you here.”

“I was just out for a walk, that’s all.” Peko couldn’t help but admire the gentle creature nudging her
shoulder. It wasn’t that the chickens weren’t cute in their own way, but the sole cow housed within
the island’s tiny ranch area was nothing short of adorable, her enormous eyes gazing back at Peko
beneath thick eyelashes. “Were you followed?”

Peko knew it was a needless question, as she took great pride in the fact that Fuyuhiko himself was
so capable as to hardly have need of bodyguard at all, save for perhaps the fact of his smaller
stature (and oh, but Peko did find time to worry that he might perfectly fit inside of a cello case,
should a kidnapping situation arise). Not that it made him any less handsome in her eyes, of course,
what with his immaculately buzzed blonde hair and dark suit, bringing out sharply intelligent eyes.

“’Course not.” Fuyuhiko grinned, putting on an air of confidence hiding a stormcloud of anxiety
that only Peko could see. “…Hey, weren’t there only chickens here before? They sneak a whole
fuckin’ cow in here over night?”

He was right to be suspicious at any change, Peko thought. If they could ever catch whoever had
kidnapped them in the first place, she could posiibly subdue them and get some answers by any
means necessary.

Peko shook her head, bemused. “Hinata-san told me that Monomi did it somehow, transforming
one of the chickens into a cow with that wand of her’s and something about ‘A ranch without cows
is like a soccer team without any balls’. Probably more parlor tricks and nonsense again.
Whoever’s behind all of this is just trying to confuse us.”

“Tch.” Fuyuhiko clicked his tongue. “Well it’s sure as hell not working for ‘em, because we’re
getting ourselves out of here, first chance we get.”

Someone who didn’t know him as well as Peko did might have thought might have thought that
Fuyuhiko was putting on a show or bravado. It was abundantly clear to Peko, or course, that he was
trying to convince himself rather than her.

“Should we go over the plan one more time?” Peko offered, adjusting her glasses.

Outlining their roadmap to escape had become something of a ritual for them, a mantra offering
comfort in a trying time.

“Nah…” Fuyuhiko reached out a hand, patting the cow on the nose, earning a gentle ‘moo’ in
return. “I’d rather hear about that other thing.”

“What do you mean?” Peko’s eyes narrowed at the way he avoided her gaze, continuing to stroke
the cow’s soft muzzle instead. For as long as Peko had known him, Fuyuhiko had always been
direct with her. This was a trait Peko appreciated, as the rest of the Kuzuryuu clan—save for
Natsumi—treated her as if she were part of the furniture, only addressing her when they had a task
too unsavory to dirty their own ring-encrusted fingers with.

Fuyuhiko turned to her, brows turned sharply downward, arms crossed in front of him. Rather than
anger, Peko knew his look of nerves when she saw it. “When we first arrived here, the first time
we were alone together you took me aside and told me that you had something to say to me when
we got outta here.”

Peko’s heart leapt like the smallest of the ranch’s chickens, currently popping around after a bug.
She felt her face warm. “Oh… That. Yes, I recall.”
Opening one palm in a pleading gesture, as if handing Peko the opportunity to speak her mind,
Fuyuhiko urged, “Why not now?”

“Young Master, please…” Peko’s hands balled into fists at her sides. “Someone could stumble
upon us here at any time. It’s not wise to waste our stolen time together with something so
frivolous.”

Her words were far from a lie- Feelings such the ones she harbored for her young master were
nothing short of frivolous. If she were to speak them aloud now, it would only cause Fuyuhiko to
worry, putting his life at jeopardy if he were so distracted.

“How much fuckin’ time do ya think we got?” Fuyuhiko was shouting now, but Peko held her
ground. He had always been passionate. However, he seemed to realize how he sounded, gritting
his teeth as he dropped into a lower tone. “That shit plan… Only one of us walks out of alive, and
you know it. If we go through with it, it’s now or never. Look, I got things on my mind too; you’re
not the only one, Peko.”

Peko opened her mouth, but the words caught in her throat. Trying again, she spoke slowly, as if
drawing the words by rope from a deep well. “What sorts of things, if I may ask?”

Fuyuhiko smiled, and it was bitter as the one he had always held at the funerals of clan members
fallen to an enemy knife blade. He drew nearer to her, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder.

“I’ll tell you when we get outta here.”

Peko Pekoyama may have been predictable, but then again, the same could be said of Fuyuhiko
Kuzuryuu.

“I look forward to it.”
