Bagacay National High School’s Practices in Ensuring there is no Stagnant water in School

Excess water, also referred to as standing water, is unable to flow or drain away properly it will become
stagnant over time. Heavy rainfall is the main culprit. It can also happen when more rain falls after a prolonged
period of wet weather, the rainfall itself might not be significant but it’s just enough to tip existing water levels
over the edge. Normally, if rain falls onto a hard surface, like roof tiles or concrete, it will roll away and seek
the nearest drain. Problems can also occur if a pipe is leaking or burst entirely which can cause water to
accumulate over time. If left untreated, it will become stagnant water.
Surface water flooding happens when water that has fallen onto a hard surface cannot roll away or find a
drain. It also happens when water falls onto a vegetated or soft surface that is already saturated so it can’t soak
up any more water. They say that prevention is the best solution to stop stagnant water and any hazards it
causes.
These are few preventive measures Bagacay National High School with the collaborative effort of its
faculty took to stop a serious problem from arising, such as:
 Maintaining and checking drains regularly for blockages and signs of damage or poor
performance. Classroom teachers also contact schools utility personnel or a professional drainage
expert if they spot any signs of a blocked drain. When it comes to blocked drains, there are a few
common signs we look out for; example gurgling plughole, rising water in the toilet after
flushing, bathroom facilities that are emptying very slowly, reflux from your pipes and plugs, bad
smells coming from drains and overflowing manholes and gullies

 Gutters play a key role in channelling excess water away from the classrooms. We regularly
check that it is in good repair and replace any parts that have deteriorated or broken. At some
time we ask help from parents as well as students in cleaning gutters using a bristle brush or a
tool designed specifically for the job and remove any debris. This will help to remove loose
leaves and debris that can block downpipes, preventing water from draining away. Keeping
gutters clean and clear will also help to prevent overflows which can cause damp patches on the
walls of the classrooms.

 We make sure roofs are in good condition.Keeping an eye on the roof is an important part of
protecting classrooms from heavy rain .Rainwater will rely on a smooth, sloped surface to find
its way into the gutters and down pipes that’ll help it to flow away from the classrooms. Small
cracks and gaps on roofs are fixed in the short term with emergency roof sealant.

 Internal plumbing can cause major issues with flooding and damage if not correctly maintained.
We made sure to locate and check the main water supply stop valve to allow for quick isolation
of any leaks or bursts

 We make raincatchers useful to collect rainfall for capturing water for outdoor use – such as
watering your plants – but can also help to manage the flow of water off your classrooms.
