SECTION A: Essay (40)

SECTION B: Longer Transactional Text (20)
SECTION C: Shorter Transactional Text (20)

2. Answer ONE question from EACH section.

3. Write in the language in which you are being assessed.

4. Start EACH section on a NEW page.

5. You must plan (e.g. using a mind map/diagram/flow chart/key words), edit and
proofread your work. The plan must appear BEFORE each text.

6. All planning must be clearly indicated as such and handed in. It is advisable to
draw a line through all planning.

7. You are strongly advised to spend approximately:

 75 minutes on SECTION A
 38 minutes on SECTION B
 37 minutes on SECTION C

8. Number the answers correctly according to the numbering system used in this
question paper.

9. Give each response a suitable title/heading.

QUESTION 1

 Write an essay of between 200 and 250 words in length on ONE of the following
topics.
 Write down the QUESTION NUMBER and TITLE of your essay correctly,
e.g. 1.1 It was unexpected.
 Give your own title if your choice is QUESTION 1.3 or one of the pictures in
QUESTIONS 1.5, 1.6, 1.7 and 1.8.
 Spend approximately 75 minutes on this section.

SECTION B: LONGER TRANSACTIONAL TEXT

QUESTION 2

 Respond to ONE of the transactional writing tasks below.

 The body of your response should be between 80 and 100 words in length.
Write down the QUESTION NUMBER and the HEADING of the text you have
chosen, e.g. 2.1 Friendly Letter.
 Pay particular attention to format, language, register and audience.
 Spend approximately 38 minutes on this section.

2.1 FRIENDLY LETTER

Your parent, who works in another town, could not come home during the last
public holiday.

Write a letter to your parent telling him/her about how you spent the day. [20]

2.2 FORMAL LETTER

You are planning to further your studies at a university/college in 2023.

Write a letter of application for admission to the university/college of your

choice. The letter must be addressed to the Registrar. [20]

2.3 DIALOGUE

Your friend has been disrespectful to your teacher after being reprimanded at
school. You have decided to speak to your friend about his/her behaviour.

Write the dialogue that takes place between you and your friend. [20]

2.4 SPEECH

You have been doing charity work for your local old age home for the past five
years. You have now received the award of Charity Worker of the Year from
your local council. The council has asked you to prepare an acceptance
speech that you will present at the awards ceremony.

Write the speech you will present. [20]

SECTION C: SHORTER TRANSACTIONAL TEXT

QUESTION 3

 Choose ONE of the topics below and write a short text.

 The body of your response should be between 60 and 80 words in length.
 Write down the QUESTION NUMBER and the HEADING of the text you have
chosen, e.g. 3.1 Invitation.
 Spend approximately 37 minutes on this section.

3.1 INVITATION

Your sister/brother will be turning twenty-one soon. Your parents intend to

have a birthday party for her/him. You have been given the task to design the
invitation card which will be sent to the guests.

Write the invitation you will send out.

NOTE: Do NOT include illustrations or drawings. [20]

3.2 SHORT MESSAGE

You are participating in the famous Idols singing competition in another city
which is far from home.

Write a WhatsApp message to your mother/father, telling her/him about your

experience in this competition. [20]

3.3 INSTRUCTIONS

Your parents are away for a weekend. They have asked you to take care of
your younger brother/sister at home. They have left you with a set of
instructions.

Write the instructions that your parents have given you. [20]
