SECTION A: Essay (50)


SECTION B: Transactional texts (2 x 25) (50)

2. Answer ONE question from Section A and TWO questions from Section B.

3. Write in the language in which you are being assessed.

4. Start EACH section on a NEW page.

5. Plan (e.g. using a mind map/diagram/flow chart/key words), edit and


proofread your work. The planning must appear BEFORE the answer.

6. All planning must be clearly indicated as such. It is advisable to draw a line


through all planning.

7. You are strongly advised to spend your time as follows:

 SECTION A: approximately 80 minutes


 SECTION B: approximately 70 (2 x 35) minutes

8. Number the answers correctly according to the numbering system used in this
question paper.

9. The title/heading must NOT be included when doing a word count.

 Respond to TWO of the following topics.
 The body of EACH of your answers should be 180–200 words (20–25 lines) in
length.
 Pay careful attention to the following:

- Choice of words and language structure
- Format
 Write down the NUMBER and the TITLE/HEADING of the text you have chosen,
e.g. 2.1 Obituary.
2.1 OBITUARY

During a major sporting event at a stadium, a terrorist group/group of protestors


took five athletes hostage. During the rescue operation, one of the athletes,
who had recently announced his/her retirement from athletics, was fatally
wounded. Write the obituary for this celebrated athlete. [25]

Staying true to yourself can be tough when all you


want to do is fit in. Knowing who you are can help

2.3 FORMAL REPORT

Learners at your school have been guilty of vandalising school property on a


regular basis. Your principal has instructed you to investigate the situation and
make recommendations regarding the prevention of such incidents. You are
also required to propose appropriate measures to address this unacceptable
behaviour.

Write the report you will submit to the Chairperson of the Governing Body and
the principal of your school. [25]

2.4 LETTER OF REQUEST

The world is facing a water crisis and, as a member of your school’s


Environmental Club, you feel strongly that the municipality needs to consider
measures to save and recycle water. You believe that a water recycling plant
would be the ideal solution in your community.

Write a letter to the mayor of your town requesting that the municipality
consider the construction of such a plant. [25]

2.5 INTERVIEW

A member of your community has survived a terrible ordeal and now uses the
experience to motivate others. You have been asked to interview him/her for
your local radio station.

Write the interview which you conduct with this inspirational person. [25]

The learners of your school have proposed a change to the choice of subjects
offered by the school. You are the Representative Council of Learners member
