Title
"Avatar 3" is a temporary title.[6] A November 2018 BBC article claimed that the
title would be Avatar: The Seed Bearer.[7][8] Cameron later clariZed in a February
2018 ET interview that the title was one of many under consideration and the
sequel titles hadn't been Znalized at that time.[9]

Plot
On April 20, 2010, Cameron conZrmed that Avatar 2 will take place in Pandora's
oceans and that Avatar 3 will explore more of the Alpha Centauri System.[10] As
the scripts for all four sequels were Znished in 2015, that plot element likely
changed; in a February 2018 interview with Collider, Jon Landau conZrmed that
the Avatar sequels would remain on Pandora and focus more on exploring its
environments and cultures.[11]

It is intended that the plot be able to stand alone, though it will form part of a
meta-narrative that extends from Avatar 2 to 5.[12] Underwater elements will be a
major aspect of Avatar 2 and 3, though they will also have some role in Avatar 4
and 5.[13]

In an interview published by the French newspaper "20minutes" on December 10,

2022, James Cameron mentions that Zre will play a role in Avatar 3, represented
by "Ash People", suggesting volcanic activity. The "Ash People" will be led by a
female Na'vi known as Varang. The Zlm will show the Na'vi in a diLerent light than
the previous installments, in which humans are depicted negatively and the Na'vi
appear in a very positive light. Avatar 3 will show the opposite. The Zlm will also
explore new worlds and continue the story of the main characters.[14] James
Cameron has mentioned the story will focus on not just one, but two new cultures.
[15]

While attending the Critics Choice Awards on January 15, 2023, James Cameron
stated that the Zlm will feature two completely new cultures, including the
previously mentioned "Ash People". He added "Fire has a symbolic purpose in the
Zlm and there’s a culture that is speciZcally around that concept."[16]

According to Jack Champion, the story will take an unpredictable and shocking
"hard left turn."[17] Also, Spider will have more inner turmoil and conlict in Avatar.
[18]

James Cameron has hinted that the story will be focused on Lo'ak and that he will
be the narrator.[19] Payakan and Mick Scoresby will return.[20]

Production

Writing
The writing of Avatar began in 2013 with Josh Friedman was originally at the
helm. However, around 2016,[29] James Cameron wished to divide Avatar 2 into
two separate movies because of the amount of material and he rewrote them into
being separate movies.[30] This means that Rick JaLa and Amanda Silver, who
worked on The Way of Water, are the primary story writers of the Znalized Avatar
3[citation needed] and not Friedman, although he still contributed to story ideas. The
scripts of all four Avatar sequels Znished in 2017.[citation needed]

Filming
After Cameron conZrmed the sequels, he conZrmed that Avatar 2 and Avatar 3
would be Zlmed back-to-back, elaborating: “I am in the process of writing the next
two Avatar Elms now. We are planning to shoot them together and [edit them in
post-production] together, and we will probably release them not quite back to
back, but about a year apart.” [31] One reason for shooting the Zlms back to back
was because he didn't want the younger cast members to signiZcantly age
between sequels.[32]

In October 2013, Sam Worthington mentioned that the three sequels would start
shooting in fall 2014,[33] however Weaver later stated that her shoots would not
take place until fall 2015.[34] In actuality, these Zlming plans were delayed.

In September 2017, James Cameron expressed intent to start production on

Avatar 4 and 5 after the release of Avatar 3, as part of the back-to-back
production and release schedule of the sequels. Avatar 2 and 3 would be shot
back to back and go through post production sequentially, in a "two and two
structure" that will also be done for Avatar 4 and 5.[35] On February 6, 2018, David
Thewlis conZrmed having a Na'vi character role in Avatar 3-5, having already done
motion capture work for Avatar 3 in Los Angeles.[23]

During promotion for Avengers: InEnity War (2018), Zoe Saldana said that motion
capture on Avatar 2 and 3 was "just about done", with pre-production starting
afterwards on the live action portion. The New Zealand location Zlming took place
for six months. She mentioned overall production as approximately halfway done.

On October 29, 2018, Sigourney Weaver reported that her Zlming for Avatar 2
and 3 was complete.[37] On November 14, 2018, James Cameron conZrmed that
the main cast of Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang,
and Kate Winslet had Znished principal photography on Avatar 2 and 3.[38]

In a February 2019 interview for Collider, Jon Landau conZrmed that performance
capture on Avatar 2 & Avatar 3 was complete, with some partial performance
capture done for Avatar 4. He stated that live action Zlming would start in spring
2019 in New Zealand.[11] This was further emphasized by Landau in another
February 2019 interview with the LA Times, with the performance capture done
for Avatar 2, 3, and parts of 4 described as "principal capture".[39]

In September 2020, James Cameron stated that the remainder of all shooting
with Avatar was "sort of 95% complete" and that the team was Znishing up in New
Zealand.[40]

James Cameron stated in November 2022 Avatar 3 was "all shot."[41] However, also
in November 2022, Sam Worthington claimed the movie was around 80-90%
Znished shooting and "We're still owing some scenes."[42] The reason for the
discrepancy between Cameron and Worthington is currently unclear.

Delays
The Zlm was delayed by six months in 2016, in part due to a scheduling conlict
between Avatar: The Way of Water and Star Wars: The Last Jedi[43] The Zlm was
delayed again on May 6, 2019, along with the other Avatar sequels.[44] On July 23,
2020, James Cameron announced that all Avatar sequels are delayed by one year
as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. [45] The new release date for Avatar 3 is
December 20, 2024.[2]

In other Media
During the initial announcements for Pandora: The World of Avatar in 2011, James
Cameron stated that the theme park would include elements from the second and
third movies.[46] The park opened on May 27, 2017.

Trivia

The Zlm will not have a director's cut.[48]
Vin Diesel once said he would be in the Avatar sequels, saying he is "doing"
Avatar.[49] However, Jon Landau said he would not be any.[50] The
discrepancy as to why Diesel thought he would be in the series is unknown.
