B. Review Activity 1: Pick-a-Fries (Review)

To refresh your memory from our past lesson,

let’s have an activity entitled ‘Pick a Fries’.
Please listen to the mechanics.

a. I have five large fries here, and each piece of

these fries has a question. I will select a
student to come to the front, pick a fry, and
answer the question written on it.
b. The Process will continue until all the fries have
been picked and their corresponding questions
answered.

Questions:

1) What is the term for a proposed explanation,

assertion, or assumption about a population
parameter which may or may not be true?
2) What are the two types of hypotheses?
3) Which type of hypothesis indicates no
significant difference, no changes, nothing
happened, or no relationship between two
parameters?
4) Which type of hypothesis suggests a significant
difference, an effect, change, or relationship
between a parameter and a specific value?
5) Which type of hypothesis does the researcher
test to decide if it is rejected or accepted?

C. Motivation Did you know that a hypothesis test is very

important across fields?

For example, in your upcoming subject, Practical

research 2 (Quantitative Research), next school
year, you will be conducting research, which means
you need to formulate a hypothesis and test it
afterward. Hypotheses in research provide focus
and direction and serve as a guide in data

collection.

In the field of science, hypothesis testing helps us

determine whether new medicines are effective in
curing ailments or if certain fertilizers cause plants
to grow more. Even in the development of everyday
items like ballpoint pen and paper, researchers
conducted hypothesis testing to determine if
chemicals used were harmful or not to the users.

In business mathematics, hypothesis testing is

used to evaluate whether new advertising
campaigns, marketing techniques, and so on, lead
to increased sales.

There are many more applications as well. So

please listen carefully because our lesson this
morning is very helpful to you, not just now but
also in the future.

D. Presentation of the
*Presentation of the Learning Objectives
Lesson
1. Activity Activity 2: Match Me!
Directions: Match the phrases in Column A with
the symbols in Column B. To complete the activity,
stand up and move your body according to the
corresponding moves assigned to each letter.
A – move your hips forward
B – move your hips backward
C – move your hips to the left
D – move your hips to the right
E – bend your head forward
F – turn your head

Column A Column B
1. is higher than A. ≠
2. is decreased or B. ¿
reduced from C. ≥
3. is exactly the D. ¿
same as E. ¿
4. is not the same F. ≤
5. is greater than
or equal to

2. Analysis
1. How did you find your activity?
2. What observations have you made about the
phrases and symbols?

Tell the learners:

Phrases such as “equal”, “less than”, “greater
than or equal to”, “less than or equal to”, and “not
equal to” and others are very important and serve
as guides in formulating hypothesis.

3. Abstraction Formulating Hypothesis: Guide Words

Null Hypothesis ( H o )
= equal to, the same as, not changed from, is

Alternative Hypothesis ( H a ∨H 1)
≠ not equal, different from, changed from, not the
same as
> greater than, above, higher than, longer than,
bigger than, increased, at least
< less than, below, lower than, smaller than, shorter
than, decreased or reduced from, at most

Define Parameter

A parameter is used to describe the entire

population being studied. A population is a set of
all people, objects, events, or ideas that wish to
investigate. Usually, the parameter describes the
average or mean of the population.

Consider the following examples.

Example 1. A librarian of a school claims that all

their senior high school students read an average of
10 books a month. A random sample of senior high
students read an average of 12 books. The
confidence statement is 95%. What parameter
should these students consider proving this claim?
State the null hypothesis and alternative
hypothesis.

Answers:

Parameter of interest: the average number ofbooks

read by senior high school students.

Null Hypothesis: The average number of books read

by the senior high school students is 10 books.
H 0 : μ1=10

Alternative Hypothesis: The average number of

books read by the senior high school students is
not 10 books
H 1 : μ 1 ≠ 10

Example 2. A social worker wants to test (at 0.05

level of significance) wether the average body mass

index (BMI) of the pupils under feeding program is
different from 18.2 kg.

Answers:

Parameter of interest: The average BMI of the

pupils under feeding program.

Null Hypothesis: The average BMI of the pupils

under feeding program is not different from 18.2.
H 0 : μ1=18.2

Alternative Hypothesis: The average BMI of the

pupils under feeding program is different from
18.2.
H 1 : μ 1 ≠ 18.2

Example 3. A DTI representative wants to test at

99% confidence level whether the average content
of SODA X is less than 330 ml as indicated in the
label.

Answers:

Parameter of interest: The average content of Soda

X.

Null Hypothesis: The average content of soda x is

greater than or equal to 330 ml.
H 0 : μ1 ≥ 330

Alternative Hypothesis: The average content of

Soda X is less than 330 ml.
H 1 : μ 1<330

*During the discussion encourage the learners to

ask questions or any clarifications. The teacher
ensures that the medium of instruction is merged
with the learners’ mother tongue for them to
understand better.

Activity 3: Think-Pair-Share!
Directions: Read and analyze the given situation.
Choose only one situation to answer based on your
preference. THINK about what you know or have
learned about the topic. PAIR with your seatmate
and SHARE your thinking with your partner about
your chosen situation. Write your answer on a half-
crosswise paper.
1. The average height of grade 11 female
students is 158.2 cm. the mean height of a
sample of 100 female is 160 cm with a
standard deviation of 6 cm.

2. The net weight of a packet of a snack brand
is 130g. A sample of 80 packs yielded a
sample mean weight of 112 g with standard
deviation of 15g.
3.

4. Application The learners will be divided into 6 groups. Each

group will have the opportunity to engage
cooperatively and collaboratively in the activity.

Activity 4: Hypothesis Testing Challenge

Directions: Select only one item to answer. Identify
the parameters to be tested and state the null and
alternative hypothesis in words and in symbolic
form. Write your answers on the given cartolina
paper and paste it on the board. The first 3 groups
to correctly paste their answers on the board will
receive an additional 5 points.

1. The average height of female Grade 11

students in Tabango National High School -
Senior high school (TNHS-SHS) is 160 cm.
The mean height of a sample of 100 female
students is 163 cm with a standard
deviation of 6 cm.
2. The net weight of a milkfish that is harvested
in the fishpen in PIT-Tabango is 130g. A
sample of 80 milkfish yielded a sample mean
weight of 112g with a standard deviation of
15 g.
3. A library-in-charge of TNHS-SHS claims that
all their senior high school students read an
average of 10 books a month. A random
sample of senior high students read an
average of 12 books. The confidence
statement is 95%.

IV. GENERALIZATION The teacher will ask the following questions to the
students:
1. What is a parameter?
2. What are the steps in formulating a
hypothesis?
3. What challenges have you encountered while
answering your activities?

The teacher will clarify things if there is a need,

especially in areas where the students have faced
challenges.
V. EVALUATION Directions: Identify the parameter to be tested and
state the null and alternative hypothesis in words
and in symbolic form. Write your answers on a
half-crosswise sheet of paper.

1. The average number of calories of a low-

calorie meal is at most 300.
2. The social record claims that the mean score
in Math of the incoming Grade 11 students
is 81. The teacher wishes to find out if the
claim is true. She tests if there is significant
difference between the batch mean score and
the mean score of students in her class.
VI. ASSIGNMENT Provide at least three situations/ scenarios from
your daily life where you can apply hypothesis
testing. Write your answers on a half-crosswise
sheet of paper.
