When describing something, we open resort to making comparisons
to establish a clearer idea of what we are trying to describe or
explain.
While there are many types of comparisons one can make through
usual figures of speech, there are also literary techniques or devices
that can show and provide a more detailed comparison of things and
ideas. One example of this is the use of analogy.
There are some literary devices which are considered as analogy like
simile and metaphor.
SIMILE- It is a comparison of two things that are essentially
different,
using the words like or as.
Examples:
• Their house is as quiet as the mouse.
• She is as busy as a bee.
• My mother is sweet like sugar.
• Her children are like diamonds.
METAPHOR- It is a comparison that describes a person or thing
using words that are not meant literally. It compares entities directly.
Examples:
• Her children are her treasures.
• Books are his vacation.
• Grandmother’s lap is a soft pillow.
EXPLORE
This lesson focuses on the use of other rhetorical device like
“analogy”
in comparing things in order to describe or make a point.
