Feed intake is a critical aspect of raising healthy chicks.

Proper feeding ensures they receive the

necessary nutrients to grow and thrive. Here are some key considerations for managing chick feed
intake:

1. Starter Feed:

Start with a high-quality chick starter feed formulated for young chicks. It contains the essential
nutrients, including proteins, vitamins, and minerals, that chicks need for healthy growth.

Ensure the feed is fresh and free from contaminants. Store it in a cool, dry place to prevent spoilage.

2. Feeding Schedule:

Provide feed to chicks as soon as they are placed in the brooder. Chicks typically eat within hours of
hatching.

Initially, offer feed 24 hours a day to ensure continuous access. As they grow, you can establish a feeding
schedule, usually three to four times a day, but always ensure there's access to clean water.

3. Monitoring and Adjusting:

Keep an eye on the chicks' behavior. They should be active and alert. If they appear lethargic or are
pecking at each other excessively, it may be a sign of nutritional deficiencies or other issues.

Adjust feed quantities based on chick behavior. Avoid overfeeding, as it can lead to health problems.
Chicks usually self-regulate their intake, but if they're consistently leaving a lot of feed uneaten, you may
be offering too much.

4. Water Access:

Always provide clean, fresh water alongside the feed. Chicks require water for digestion and overall
health.

Ensure that waterers are clean and don't allow chicks to drown.

5. Transitioning to Grower Feed:

Around 6-8 weeks of age, transition chicks to a grower feed specially formulated for their growth stage.
This feed has a slightly different nutrient profile to support their development.

Gradually mix the starter feed with the grower feed over a few days to ease the transition.

6. Grit and Supplements:

Depending on your chicks' diet, they may require grit to aid in digestion, especially if they are foraging
outdoors.

Consult with a poultry nutritionist or veterinarian if you plan to provide additional supplements to
ensure you're meeting their specific needs.

Remember that different chick breeds and individual chicks may have variations in feed intake, so
closely monitoring their health and behavior is essential. Proper feeding, along with appropriate space
and temperature management, plays a vital role in raising healthy and thriving chicks.
