beyond what is appropriate for a concise definition. In addition to these
citations, terms often have a note that provides a gloss on meaning and usage.
The print edition is abridged from the online version available at
https://interparestrust.org/terminology. In general, it does not include terms
included in the InterPARES 2 Glossary (2018). Neither does it include terms
used in the Preservation as a Service of Trust (PaaST) model (Thibodeau et al.,
2018).
The terminology was developed as part of the InterPARES Trust research
project, Luciana Duranti, principal investigator. Richard Pearce-Moses was
the editor. Alicia Barnard provided translations to Spanish and Rosely
Rondinelli provided translations to Portuguese. This work reflects many
individuals’ collaborative research on cloud issues.

slavery, so that they may serve as a moral compass and prevent repeti-
tion of similar acts.
e-governance n. ~ The use of technology to support and automate a govern-
ing body’s internal processes and delivery of services, but also to promote
transparency and participation in the process by those governed.
e-government n. ~ IP2: The use of information technologies, especially the
internet, to improve government services for and interactions with citi-
zens (G2C), businesses and industry (G2B), and different division of gov-
ernment (G2G) by simplifying processes, and by integrating and
eliminating redundant systems.
Note: Often used synonymously with electronic government, e-gov,
Internet government, digital government, online government, or
connected government.
forensics n. ~ The use of scientific techniques to examine, gather (or
recover), and analyze information in a way that maintains its integrity.
Note: Developed in large part to gather evidence during investigations of
potential criminal activity, forensics can be used in other contexts to
more fully understand the nature of materials being studied for a wide
range of purposes.
governance n. ~ A senior-level administrative structure that sets strategy for
an organization by identifying roles, responsibilities, decision-making
processes, policies, and procedures and that monitors outcomes and
compliance.
Note: In a corporate environment, boards of directors are responsible for
governance. Stockholders appoint the directors and auditors to satisfy
themselves that an appropriate governance structure is in place.
hybrid cloud n. ~ A deployment model in which two or more clouds
(private, community, or public) remain unique entities, but are
connected by standardized or proprietary technology that enables data
and application portability.
identity n. ~ 1. Characteristics that distinguish one entity from another and
that make them recognizable. ~ 2. IP2: The whole of the characteristics of
a document or a record that uniquely identify it and distinguish it from
any other document or record; with integrity, a component of
authenticity.
identity management n. ~ 1. COMPUTING: Policies, procedures, and
techniques designed to enhance security by ensuring only authorized
individuals can access systems and information resources they have
permission to use. ~ 2. BUSINESS: Policies and procedures to monitor and
protect a corporate brand in the public sphere.
information governance n. ~ A senior-level administrative structure that
