The Charpy impact test measures the toughness of a material by determining the amount of energy absorbed when a notched specimen fractures from the impact of a falling pendulum. The experiment involves creating V-notched specimens, calibrating a Charpy impact testing machine, positioning a specimen in the machine so the notch faces away from the striker, and recording the energy absorbed during fracture. Results are then discussed by comparing the measured energy to theoretical values and literature on the material's properties and applications where toughness is important.

Objective: The objective of impact test is to determine or measure the amount of energy absorbed by specimen at room temperature during fracture. This absorbed energy is a measure of a given material's toughness. Experimental procedure: Materials and equipment used for: Charpy Notch Broach V-notched specimens Centering tongs Charpy impact testing machine (358 Joules capacity) Methodology Charpy: Use a Charpy notch broach, to create a 2mm deep V-notch (at 45°) with a tip radius of 0.25 mm on one of the faces (across the length) of Charpy specimen. Perform a zero-error test. This is done to ensure that your machine is well calibrated. Use centering tongs to transfer specimen to the Charpy impact testing machine, make sure the specimen is in position and that the notch is faced away from the striker of the pendulum. Record the energy absorbed. Literature review Give a full discussion of your material (the material you were given) include chemical composition, mechanical properties and where the material is used (application). Define Charpy impact test and mechanism of the test. Applications of Charpy impact
Results and Discussion of results
Record the energy absorbed. Discuss the energy absorbed value (measured in our laboratory) against the theoretical energy absorbed and use literature to support your discussion.
