In the past module, we’ve learned the different journey of God’s people away from the captivity and
witnessed the different miraculous things God made to set his people free. In this module, we will get to learn the
rules God has set to His people.

Lesson A.1. Explaining the Ten Commandments

To better understand the Ten Commandments, the first part of the discussion will show how the Israelites
kept each commandment.

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

1. I, the Lord, am your God. You shall not have any other gods beside me.

The Israelites faced many temptations to worship other gods such as nature and Baal, but the covenant
bound them to an exclusive worship of Yahweh.

2. You shall not take the name of the Lord, your God, in vain.
The Israelites believed that the name of a person held special importance ad power. The name represented
the person. In Scripture, whenever God gives a person important mission, He also gives that person a new
name to signify his or her new life and mission.

3. Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day.


God commanded a day of worship and rest to bring Israelites to a deeper appreciation of Him. The
Israelites observed the Sabbath as a day of worship and rest to commemorate God’s creation of rest and
their liberation from slavery.

4. Honor your father and your mother.
This commandment means we should respect our parents and our elders in words and deeds. Our parents
brought us into the world, and they nourish and support us. Obeying this commandment is not always
easy. Nonetheless, our respect for them must come from the fundamental fact that the serve as God’s
channels of His life and love.

1. Your parents do not allow you to go out with your friends even on weekends. They believe you are
too young to go to different places without an adult companion for supervision.

Killing an innocent person is murder. Murder is forbidden and is considered a terrible crime. It can be
motivated by anger or reasons of personal gain.

The sixth commandment forbids a person from entering into sexual union with anyone other than his or
her spouse. The ninth commandment goes a step further. It prohibits from entertaining impure or lustful
thoughts and desires.

The seventh commandment deals with our outward actions regarding our possessions. It is a relationship
that should be governed by justice and love. The tenth commandment thwarts the inner temptations to
crave for something that belongs to other.

The eighth commandment prohibited the Israelites from telling lies. God’s holiness and truth
sustained the throughout their whole journey. As Christians we are called to witness the truth for
Christ our Lord is the truth.

The Ten Commandments provide us with basic moral norms for discerning good acts
from evil acts. Obeying God’s laws means respecting the moral rights of every human.
